Ford Auburn clutch pressure plate bracket

Post by YLG80 » Thu Feb 15, 2018 1:31 am

I've found an Auburn clutch pressure plate assembly in a pile of jeep parts.
It's a Ford bracket type TP-28-4 and the attached pressure plate is the 8 1/2'' model.
Here is the bracket. Was it originally painted in Ford gray ?

I've decided to disassemble, cleanup and restore the assembly. I will keep it as a spare part.

Have you ever remarked that the F-marked bracket was painted in Ford gray ? :?: :?:

I thought that the bracket was left unpainted.
Now the bracket is still black with the Tanik rust inhibitor but my intent is to finish it in gray Ford if it looks correct :D .

Interesting to note the punch stroke as a reference to reassemble the pressure plate assembly in the same position on the flywheel.(correct balance)
TM-10-1513
Prick punch both the pressure plate and the flywheel so that the assembly can be installed in the same position after the repairs are performed.

I've eventually painted the pressure plate bracket in gray.

Pressure plate assembly with a drill stand as a hand press.
Compressing the springs one by one is much easier.
The drill stand can be blocked in a low position allowing you to insert the adjusting screws and return springs.

Assembling the return springs is easier that it appears.
- Compress the finger pressure spring
- Insert the return spring as far as you can below the finger taking care of putting the spring under the clutch finger pivot pin.
- Engage the adjusting screw + locking nut + washer
- With a hook, pull the return spring under the washer as much as you can.
- Tighten the adjusting screw a bit more

Assemble the clutch pressure plate with the clutch plate on a flywheel and adjust the 3 fingers as per the TM.(see Clutch finger adjustment)

As that clutch pressure plate will be stored as a spare part, I will put a plastic peel-off adhesive on the plate surface.

Yves,It will be to nice to install...I would hang it on the wall with a spotlight on it 8)
Hi Luc !
Very good idea. I'm just building garages.
One will be for my jeep, and it will be perfect to hang that pressure plate on the wall.
Or I could transform it into a very heavy and stable desk lamp.

The pressure plate itself and the bracket are looking in a pretty good shape and the bracket is not distorted.

I've not remarked any damages to the pressure plate square pillars and square holes.

In fact and as far as I can remember, the bracket looks better than the one in my jeep.
I was just surprised to find an 8 1/2'' pressure plate attached to that Ford GPW bracket.

I've found that clutch bracket in the workshop of a former army mechanic who passed away a few years ago.
That mechanic used to work for the US army after WWII and afterwards for the Belgian Army.
He had many, many, many spare parts.
The shop was in a very bad shape with water leakage in the roof. It was urgent to move all the parts somewhere else.
His son had asked to a friend to evacuate everything from the shop and that friend asked me to show him what has a value.
I helped him also to identify the parts and sort them out.
Believe me, there were a lot a valuables parts over there.
Many of them still in the cosmoline.
Like many crated axles (are they so weak :?: ?), steering parts, knuckles, two complete frames, front grill, complete spring sets, tools etc ....
Really an Ali Baba cave with also original parts removed from jeeps !
A few years ago, I was told that this mechanic had crated GPW engine blocks in the past, received from the Belgian army when they decided to sell the jeeps as surplus.
We've not found them but there were a few engine blocks.
Most of the parts were for jeeps. A few were for other MV's.

To thank me, the guy told me to pickup whatever I wanted.
Unfortunately, too late for me, so I took only a handful of parts.
I really don't need to transform my new garage into a warehouse :) !
