Late war seat cushions (seat trims)

Post by Ladislav » Mon Jan 22, 2018 8:01 am

I was told, the seat back trims of late war MB jeeps were different. There were not 3 canvas tabs (2 side, 1 top) to fasten the trim to seat frame, but only 1 long routing around the seat back frame? The trims were standart "S" spring ones.
Any comments?
Any pics?

Thanks, Lad.

That would be true...but the front and rear upper back cushions had the wrap-around tab rather than the 3-tab design. By then they were S-spring style also.

Hello Lad,

I have some pictures of some of my seats that I think you are looking for,
I do not know if these are actual late WW2 seats or French as they are on my ex French MB here in USA.
But the jeep is an 98% MB and was rebuilt in 1962.
They appear to be S spring design, if that is what I am looking at ?
This is the driver's seat, I will get the passenger seat pics posted soon.

Hello Lad,

Here are some pics of the passenger seat, and a picture of the bottom of the passenger bottom cushion .
Again, not sure these are US, but very well could be !
The bottom cushions seem to be standard design, the uppers have the wrap around canvas.

Hi Ray,

thanks for posting your pics! The original pics I have had available are unfortunately very small, but looking on your pics I am pretty sure your cushions and backs both are correct (can anyone confirm?). I am going to equip my Febr. 1945 Willys MB after Greece Army with the correct cushions.
Thanks for nice details. :)

Does anyone know where to find the spring shaped (like a stretched spring) of wire used to hold all the Z springs together? I am rebuilding a set of seats and I can not seem to find the correct, or even a similar, wire anywhere.

Hello Lad,

Glad I could help !!
Good luck on your Greek jeep !!
I have an ex-Greek tub that had the recoil-less rifle mounted on it once, with the tail gate cut out.
I think they are US cushions, I have another cover for the rear seat top, that was here is US that is the same design, a wrap around.

Brett, I do not know where to get components, but keep looking on ebay for old seats, and hopefully they will have decent springs !

Best regards,

Ray

Thanks,
Lad.

Brett,

here on g503 were more forums about these "S" seat cushions. In Italy is one (Paolo) but also in US is one making nice springs. Try on g503. And look these links on:

Ladislav,

Thanks for the thread link. I have a set of Paolo seats that need some minor work. I have a few broken Z springs and I need to source the wire that is coiled around the Z springs before I start taking them apart.

I believe that MBs had S-spings in the late war seat backs. GPWs never did.

Ladislav, Thanks. I have the S springs already.

Chuck,

My 1945 GPW front seats were original seats and they had S springs. I don't think the rear had S springs. Dexter has them now, hopefully he can confirm.
