FYI Rust proofing fuel gas tank by Moyer's Tank
I sent in gas tank from a 1944 MB Willys to be coated inside and outside. Inside is a smooth red color, they removed the filter inside tank by cutting off dip tube, it has screens on both sides and was offset from the bottom. Looks like a previous owner had poked holes in it anyway, I will use an under chassis inline filter as a replacement. Outside is a thick black almost rubber like coating, very thick, see pics. I will try and paint. Also cost was $476, about the same as a new tank.

Is the outside coating to seal pin hole leaks? That is not the way to rust proof steel nor seal leaks in my opinion especially on something so visible as a Jeep fuel tank. The inside coating makes sense. Perhaps the OD paint will stick but I wouldn't bet on it.waterdawg2004 wrote: ↑Wed Jan 17, 2018 9:21 amOutside is a thick black almost rubber like coating, very thick

Too late now, but if you had searched I did a posting on an excellent solution using Caswell sealant.
It goes inside and forms a glass like epoxy chemically impervious coating that would set you back about $80 (20 gallon tank size).
I used it about 6 years back, have basically forgot about leaks.
Outside of tank I just painted, used the excess sealant that I poured out of the tank (per instructions you coat it then dump the excess out) to coat my fuel tank well bottom to keep it from rusting out too.
Your tank looks nice, I hope the straps fit and it seats well in the well.
