Did Willys run production on Sundays in ‘43?

Post by sam C. » Wed Jan 17, 2018 4:20 am

I have MB203410 and I estimate the DOD as being 18 Jan 43, which was a Sunday. It’s also possible that MB203410 has a DOD of 19 January.
Does anyone know if Willys was running production 7 days/week at that time? From what I’ve figured, if Willys was making MBs on Sundays, then MB203410 would have a DOD Of 18 Jan. If Willys wasn’t making MBs on sundays, then the DOD is 19 Jan.

Also consider whether the date is the actual date of manufacture, or the date of Government Acceptance. Which may or may not be the same day.

Why not slog through all the MBs on the serial number list with a calendar and you can answer that pretty easy.

I did that sometime in the past, Chuck. I looked for the thread but no luck finding it.

I found a fuzzy photo of a data plate with a DOD in 1944 on Dino’s site for Sunday but when I checked the serial number list there was conflicting information on the month. I checked again and see 9-22-44 vs. 10-22-44. Photo was no help.

I found four of fifty two DOD on Saturday.

Looks as though my memory isn’t what it should be. I’m getting old!
Looks like Willys ran production on Sundays and my MB was very likely delivered on this date in 1943. Today is Miss Sallie’s 75th birthday.

"MB203410 would have a DOD Of 18 Jan."

More likely Monday January 18, 1943.

Please show me other DOD where it is marked on a Sunday.

Just a thought, most large plants like that would give workers Sunday (at least morning) for family and services while the plant maintenance personnel conduct machine maintenance and stocking. Takes a lot of grease and checking of alignment on tooling to keep a production run of thousands meeting spec, so perhaps Sunday was recovery day for line workers.
Just a thought.

The discussion before was that even if the line was working the government inspectors may not have been working Sunday,

I note more DOD on Monday than any other day.

To be fair about noting the number of MB DODs on a Monday as being some kind of a clue to production on Sunday...it would be important to provide the number of MB DODs on each day of the week. A low number of Saturday DODs might mean some catch up on Monday...either in increased production or in a catch up of inspectors and DODs.

Pick 5-6 "weeks", that being Monday through Sunday...report the DODs from each day of the week...with 2 from mid 1942, 2 from mid 1943 and 2 from mid 1944.

You need a larger sample is what I'm driving at.

Mark,
Looking at the G503 serial number list:
MB203218 supposedly has a DOD of 16 Jan '43
MB203742 supposedly has a DOD of 17 Jan '43
MB203895 supposedly has a DOD of 18 Jan '43
MB203666 supposedly has a DOD of 18 Jan '43 (with original aluminum data plates)

How many MBs were made each day?

Sam, if you look at contracts for the first of 1943 it was about 6700 to 8500 per month.

They made around 300 per day so that works out to 22 to 28 days a month.

Not rocket science and this are approximate.

Hmm...are those estimated DODs or reproduction data plates or are they photos of actual data plates?

Willys? Rough estimate of 300 a day is what I have heard...they ran two lines to do that.

Lots of variables to consider. I think I'll be dating it as 18 Jan 43 and calling it good, unless someone turns up with data to the contrary.

Thanks guys.
