Re: What do you think about this tire pump?
Don't claim to be a hand operated tire pump expert, but that is definitely what you have there.
Just kidding !
If it was Military. I would think O.D. instead of black.
Post war might have been black although, I am thinking, seems the early pumps were cast base with a brass tube. Later was steel tube. Seems I do remember some pumps being brass. No paint. Like a fire extinguisher. Most of those tarnished from age.
This one has obviously been recently painted. Nice shine.
The wood handle looks to be in really good shape.
Does it work ??
I am thinking the hose is too long. Originally, the hose was no longer than the overall length of the pump with the handle down. Stowed easier that way. No need to curl the hose.
I am thinking this one may be older by the hex cap on the tube. Some of the newer pumps I have, have a round smooth cap.
Any markings on the base ??
Probably not much help or what you were looking for but, now you know about as much about tire pumps as I do.

Re: What do you think about this tire pump?
I don't think it's a Military pump, I just looked at mine, it has no opening's on the foot, it has US on one end of the foot and QMC on the other end.
If yours has no markings on it I would say it's a civ. model.
Plus the hose connector is not correct, other then all of that, it's a shinny black pump.

Re: What do you think about this tire pump?
I have a couple of these tire pumps and neither of them look like this one. Mine were originally gray and repainted green by hand later (never black). The hose is too long, hose connector should be a screw on type, and the base should not be open and should say QMC as others have mentioned. Otherwise, it looks like a nice usable pump.

Re: What do you think about this tire pump?
Unfortunately I have no other pictures at the moment. The hose has been replaced of course. It's said to be in good working condition.
But it seems not to be so bad in fact... at least jeepdraw has some pictures of it, even in black.

Re: What do you think about this tire pump?
While it may or may not be a jeep tire pump (I don't believe it was the type supplied by Ford/Willys), it might be a replacement pump purchased by the military for something besides the jeep. While it is not possible to know what this pump originally came with in terms of a hose length and fitting on the end, the one on their now could have been original or put on there at any post-war time. Most original pumps found these days that have not been "restored" have hoses that are found to be brittle, cracked or so stiff they can't be considered usable and therefore have been fitted with some kind of replacement or nothing at all.
However this hose does not have the toothed band crimped around the end to hold it on, it has a crimped type I would associate with a more modern hose attachment tool.
The date on it of "1942" is interesting....you can't even buy a civilian car in 1942 and tool production is almost entirely geared to the military so I would consider this Peters & Russell to be a "wartime" pump, purchased by the gov't or by a supplier to the military for some purpose that might not necessarily be vehicle related.
Personally, I would not want one in my tool kit for a jeep though, the solid foot type with one or another of the raised castings on the top and the inset markings on the underside would be preferable for me.

Re: What do you think about this tire pump?
I've seen one 100% military version of the "open foot" style pump. OD with a 1942 date and U.S. raised on the top -- same as the Jeepdraw example only OD. I've had other factory OD ones like this but never with the "US" and date.

Re: What do you think about this tire pump?
Thanks for the replies and the input.
At least it seems to be a wartime production even if it's not stamped as ORD or QMC. And so there is nevertheless a very reasonable chance that it has been put into a Willys be it by the manufacturers itself (in case of shortcomings) or later on in the unit(s) it was assigned to or by some soldier "commandeering" it for the one that was lost or broken.
As it's very hard to get some vintage parts over here (I did not want to buy a replica) I bought it. I will post some more pictures as soon as I get it.

Re: What do you think about this tire pump?
" commandeering " That hit a nerve.
When I was assigned to the mechanized inf. unit I was with at Ft Hood Tx. My position was squad track driver. An M-125A1. An M-113A1 set up to carry a mortar.
Lucky me, my track was a brand new unit. Had all the accessories. This was great at inspection time. No gigs for missing equipment. Just water in the fan tower. Right !! An Army thing. They couldn't just give me a clean sheet.
My biggest problem. Keeping all the accessories. Dang things would grow legs and walk off !!
At least being a tracked vehicle, I didn't have to worry about a tire pump.

Re: What do you think about this tire pump?
Another delivery has arrived and more close up pictures are available...
As the example on http://jeepdraw.com/G503_Tyre_Pumps.html it's marked "US 1942" and with "No. 190", whatever this number stands for. But the Dalton Foundries pump on jeepdraw shows the same number.
