And I live 1800 miles east of Linden, Lawrence was a wonderful person, no cuss words, always upbeat. The telephone shrunk the distance. He set the standard for talking Jeep.

But wait, Mark contributed so much info when he was still living in California... Mmmm
That’s great info Mark. The BOM image is a little distorted but looks like an Int/Ext washer on the two 50163 3/8-24 NF bolts that hold the toe board gussets to the outside of the frame? And an ext star washer as well?
Good stuff, thanks for posting this.

Ya got me there. But not everybody knows Mark's illustrious background on the left Coast.
The BOM picture is probably blurry because he was trying to hold the book open with one hand and take the picture one-handed with an I-phone.
I'm sure he can get a better shot if you need it.

Re: What is the body hold down bolt sizes
Perfect timing. Just yesterday I took my Sept. '44 MB body tub off the rotisserie and placed it on the frame to serve a jig as I complete the panel welding and beating. I bolted it down with whatever 3/8" bolts were in the coffee can but started to wonder....where am I going to get period correct looking bolts for this when I'm ready to bolt it down for good? The remains of the original bolts I removed are unsuitable. I could use ungraded bolts and try not to notice the head profile being so low compared to original, but then worry about the strength. I could use grade 5 bolts and go through the trouble of grinding off the hash marks, but again, the low profile head issue. I could go on eBay and search for the correct bolts and pay way more than this particular project is worth, but even then, it may take a while to get enough in the correct sizes, not to mention all the other fasteners I'll be needing. What are others doing for these highly visible fasteners? Am I missing an obvious solution?

CAT bolts, Jeff.
http://g503.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f=4&t=224327
If you cannot find originals or reproductions, CAT bolts are the correct height... you still have to grind off the head marking.
Thanks for the kind comments, but more often than not, it is a group effort with individuals seeing a need and others taking an interest!

Thanks Mark! Now I remember reading about that a long time ago. This project has been on the back burner for way too long.

Re: What is the body hold down bolt sizes
I’m also looking for the most correct looking MB body to frame bolts in another thread. I’ve read this one with great interest. I’m going to look into buying some CAT bolts in the sizes annotated in Marks photos and from the SNL that Joel indicated. I don’t mind grinding the heads a little. Since I have two MB’s that are of the Type II Supression System, I will also try to procure the appropriate star washers. Thanks Mark and Joel for providing the data for the rest of us who are following this thread with interest.
JAB, what’s the serial number and DoD of your Sept ‘44 MB? I just bought MB 369488 (also a Sept ‘44) last summer. I’m trying to solidify a solid deliver date for it, as the plates were not present.

Re: What is the body hold down bolt sizes
I'm afraid I can't be of much help here. The jeep is a jeep salad. I only bought it for the excellent combat rims, early GPW rear seat, and GPW springs for one of my GPW's. I'm replacing those parts with MB or repro parts. The plate on the frame horn is missing, it's titled as a '46 (the year it was released from service and entered civilian life?), has the spare tire support and long straps on the frame like the latest MB's, and a body tub number of 121371, which is where the Sept. '44 date comes from. The title matches the number on the Willys truck motor and an official looking Army plate with that number is covering a big ugly hole in the dashboard.Michael O. wrote: ↑Sat Jan 06, 2018 4:27 pm...............................JAB, what’s the serial number and DoD of your Sept ‘44 MB? So where are you guys buying the Caterpillar hardware? My online searches are yielding huge lists of potentially good part numbers but few viable vendors (unless you call $8.99 for one bolt acceptable).

Re: What is the body hold down bolt sizes
JAB, try the CAT website.
https://parts.cat.com/en/catcorp/hardwa ... ageSize:24&
It’s a bit challenging to navigate to the correct bolts, and they don’t have everything. But the bolt heads are definitely better than the the thinner modern bolts at the hardware store.

Re: What is the body hold down bolt sizes
Guys, just browsed the CAT online catalog and is it just me or is every standard CAT bolt 3 inches in length? Are you guys finding the correct lengths or cutting these bolts down to size?

When you go to the CAT site from the link, underneath where it says US METRIC, theres an downward arrow. On Bolt length click on the arrow, and it will give you different lengths etc. Hope this helps

The site isn’t that iPad friendly but I made it work. Looks like selection of lengths is very limited. Hopefully the local CAT retailer will have some in stock.

Re: What is the body hold down bolt sizes
I did this a number of years ago using catalog numbers from a 50's era D-4 Cat in the shop, It was a lot of work and wasted time on the behalf of the very busy Caterpillar Parts Counter. I do have a couple of Cat Bolts in my MB Pintle because I did not think enough to keep the originals where I could find them.
