Tombstone BO guard variants
Hi all!
I just got a tombstone black out guard in a trade, and so began to search infos on it.
I have been surprised to see that there are actually two variants of it, and I didn't find more info about that.
First style:
This is the most "common", the one seen on period pictures, and also the one being reproduced.
The 3 keys are:
-invisible weld between bow and base
-1 hole on the side of the bow, passenger side
-the folded tabs end "straight"
Now the second style, which is the one I got.
Much harder to find pictured, I have not found any period picture of it on a Jeep yet.
The 3 differences are:
-clearly visible "4 hole" welds, like on Ford horseshoes
-2 holes on the bow, left and right
-smooth ending folded tabs.
I have found the second style mostly fitted on Ford GTBs.
My first impression is that the first style would be the one produced for the retrofit kits, while the second one was OEM to the Ford GTB, and was maybe used as a template?
Any info would help, I don't think this subject had been raised before!!

OK...very interesting. I used to have a different version. It had a hole in the top of the bow in the center. Also had an angled shape in the pressing on the base. I sold it many years, and don't have a picture to share...sorry.

Hi All,
Here is a picture of my Tombstone blackout guard. I am not really sure what year it is but it did come off a fender with an F stamp on driver's side. '
Thanks. Dave

Do we have any data or documents regarding the retrofit kit? Is it listed somewhere?
On the other side, is there any GTB part number for the OEM guard?

Were the hole patterns the same on all these tombstone style variants? I have a Apr 42 GPW with a hole pattern on the left fender that indicates the addition of a BODL. However neither the (repro) tombstone or horseshoe guards match up! Is there some other type I am unaware of that might have been installed?

Here are the dimensions I'm working with.
Between the two front bolt hole centers- 3⅞"
From line between two front holes to rear hole center- 2⅝" I appreciate all input.

Yes, they seem to have the same pattern, different from the later horseshoe guardseabee147 wrote: ↑Sat Jul 11, 2020 7:01 pmWere the hole patterns the same on all these tombstone style variants?
