EARLY / LATE HEAD GASKET

Post by r w devon » Sat Dec 02, 2017 12:36 pm

Hello all

I'm fitting a wartime head and have a 'later' gasket available ( smaller section between #2 and #3 )
From a trawl through earlier post , I believe the later type was for both pre and post 1945 engines whilst the early type was obviously no good for later machines.
Some expressed the opinion that they would prefer to use ONLY an early gasket with an early head.
I couldn't find any info from those having used the universal gasket on wartime heads.

What are your experiences of using a late gasket on an early head ?

Are there any downsides ? ( poor combustion etc)

Should I hang out for an early gasket if available ?

Thanks all

7267B FEL-PRO is a good match for early heads.

Thanks BJ
Hoping to pop it on tomorrow .
Both faces are newly machined, new studs, nice clean threads, thread sealant ready and will fit the fibre with metal insert gasket dry.
What could possibly go wrong !

Cheers

Above gasket appears to be similar to Fel-Pro-7285B' the Fel-Pro 7267B has a wider section with more area between #2 and #3 than the 7285B.

The late gaskets work OK, not all current manufacturers offer a choice. Earlier style does have more gasket material in the center.

Hi BJ,

Nice Ford gasket, did it come out of one of the Valve service gasket kits? I remember using one, with some gasket sealer  Needless to say, didn't take long to blow :o

I still have some of the above WWII era head gaskets that were supplied in MB/GPW A-1537/FM-GPW 18387 Valve Grind Kits. They were manufactured by both Detroit Gasket and Victor. Have been installing them in Jeeps with early heads since the 50's. They are reliable as long as the head is not distorted and the permanent anti freeze is flushed every 3-5 years. Prestone goes acidic and causes corrosion which affects the gasket.

What are your thoughts of an all copper head gasket?

All copper gaskets" do a great job.
I guess that it's finding one, not that I've looked. I do know that they were kicking around a while ago.

That's Luc, not too bad a day.
