GPW outer windshield frame repair?

Post by semberae » Fri Dec 01, 2017 7:21 pm

I have been repairing my 1942 GPW outer windshield frame. (Welding up extra holes, repairing rust holes, getting ready to put on a new panel, etc.)
What have you used to treat the rust on the inside of the pipe that makes up the frame?
Thanks. :?:

That white rust converter liquid that turns black when exposed to rust; I pour it in one of those extra holes and let it run inside the pipe. Rusteolum I think it was. Don't know if it does any good but can't hurt.

Rustoleum is the brand. And yes, painting it will provide some more protection. "Rust Reformer" is their name for it.

Personally I would go to Walmart, buy some evaporust, pour it in, let it sit at one angle for a day, (or hours) switch it to another angle the next, till you get 100% coverage, then pour out the Evaporust, let it dry out in a warm place for a few days, then add a can of rustproofing enamel and slosh it around inside. Your internal rust will be gone, sealed by the evaporust phosphate coating, then an enamel paint coating and be better than it was 75 years ago (treatment wise) now welding up the last hole will remove some of that treatment, but if you left a little wet paint inside, then welded it shut, allowed it to cool a little and rotated the wet paint to cover the inside of the weld....you should sleep well.

Eastwood makes a "Internal Frame Coating" that has a 24" tube with a conical spray pattern. I've never used it, so I can't tell you how well it might work or how large the hole would have to be for the spray nozzle. Thought you might be interested.

I have the Eastwood "Internal Frame Coating", but it takes a pretty big hole to get the nozzle in. I am going to go with Ospho Rust Treatment and Rustoleum Rusty Metal Primer. I think this will do the trick. :D
