NOS con rods
I have found a batch of NOS connecting rods in wax paper and cosmoline. I am a bit confused on parts numbers but so far I have found these numbers.
Label reads
qty 1 rod conn
8503-77-43752
9680-641775
Pkg Apr 1952
Another box reads
Quantity 1 227495
Article rcd
Stk no g503-77-43752
Processed lky 9 Mar 53
I believe 641775 is cyl 2-4. Does anyone know what is the second rod? There are many many to sort through. Perhaps I can find 641774 which I believe are cyl 1-3.
Can anyone help to identify these rods?

And reminder, the numbers printed on the rods are forging numbers and are not the number of the finished part.

Re: NOS con rods
Hi Ben
Thanks for that info. Is there any way to tell in the original wrap without opening the package. I live in the Philippines and may buy several I have found over 100 boxes.
Also I thought maybe the g503 labeled rods are military recon rods because of the (article rcd) marking? Maybe??
I can email pics but internet is to slow to try and upload to photobucket. Several failed attempts.
I also noticed I double posted by accident because internet is so slow I didn't get confirmation of the post. Sorry for the inconvenience.

Re: NOS con rods
They are Ordnance Part No. 7743752, Willys Part No. 641775 and are the Connecting Rod for Cylinders No.2 No.4 These are the latest style rod with the 3/8" Nuts and fit the MB thru M-38A1 and the 4 Cyl CJ Jeeps thru 1971.
Nice find as rods do wear out and NOS do make a difference in a rebuild.

Re: NOS con rods
Thank you all for your replies. I have found all the different types of con rods you are speaking of. Several repack that are refurb and repacked wrapped in brown paper even painted black. Refurbished by ???? That's scary???? I will not buy those when I find Nos wrapped and sealed in original packaging. There are many boxes full of refurb or recon GPW rods in the same place as these in original packaging. There are hundreds of rods here I will pick and choose carefully. I will buy just a few rods first and post pictures to get the opinion of members here as to wether or not there NOS or what before I buy a large batch.
Thanks again
Clem

Re: NOS con rods
If you can get the refurbished rods for a really good price and if they’re in nice condition consider buying them as well. They would be worth saving and can easily be checked out and certified by a reputable machine shop. Many guys wouldn’t mind having these either as the NOS ones are really just for the parts shelf.

Re: NOS con rods
There is a side clearance measurement of the installed rod (0.005" to 0.009") at the journal. This can be measured with dial indicator or feeler gauges. When rods are reconditioned the front and rear face is machined smooth and many times will allow excess side play. I usually check these rods against NOS I keep on the shelf. Federal Mogul at one time offered reconditioned rods that would have excess play.

Remember, the forging numbers on the rods are not the part number for the finished product.

Re: NOS con rods
Thank you to all.
I went back one time to look at the NOS rods and the recon rods. I only had a short time to look but so far there all the same part number on the NOS boxes but there are more than 100 stacked in a overheated philippine warehouse.
The recon rods are packed 2 different ways some bulk packed in boxes MOST F or GPW marked painted black.
Others are packed in sets of 4.
I get confused when looking at the rods. Can I ask for a better or easier way to determine if they are 1-3cyl or 2-4.
I'm no machinist nor experienced engine builder.
I look online but I don't see a clear picture to show me the oil hole difference.
Perhaps someone could provide a link? Internet here can be painfully slow. It sound easy to say just google it when you have good internet. But trust me on this it can be a real pain when pictures won't load or take forever just to find its not what you are looking for.
Thanks again to all.

Re: NOS con rods
I think in the end your goal is to make up a set of FOUR rods, right? So you need two of one style and two of the other. I have a set of pistons/rods in a box in the garage.
1) rotate them so the oiler hole is UP (easy since only one hole is drilled for the oiler, the other shoulder isn't)
2) check to see which rods/caps have more bearing to the right or left of the centerline of the rod itself.
3) now you sort them so you have two of one style and two of the other
4) now you have a "set" of them
5) assemble with new wrist pins/pistons/rings so the oiler will spray on the cylinder wall to the distributor side of the block
Ford rods have the "F", the "GPW" and various markings such as "A21" or "A22" or "B22" on them that are NOT used to identify 1&3 from 2&4.

Please, let us know what you discover. Some of us here (myself included) are very interested in a few sets! Good luck!
