Engine stamp 636953 W1 Pre-War?
Hi,
This is my first post as I've just entered the hobby and bought a '43 GPW with matching serial numbers on the chassis frame and glove box.
Would be really grateful if someone could help me with my first query. The engine has a stamp " 636953 W1" and there's a T90 transmission in place. I've read somewhere that the engine stamp shows the block to be a Willy's pre-war. Is that correct?
If so, what type of vehicle or vehicles could it come out of?
Looking forward to exploring the forum, seems packed with useful info. Not sure I'm going to be adding to it with my knowledge at this stage
Thanks,
Matt.

It's from a Willys Americar or similar; common for GPW engines to get replaced as they are thinner and lighter than Willlys block castings. Why always baffled me.

Thanks for the info.
Is there anything wrong with leaving the pre-war Willys engine in my GPW? Could it have been fitted as a replacement during the War?

No, it would not have been fitted with a pre-war civilian engine while in service. Could you use it in your GPW....the answer is simply "yes". If you are going for a factory or even motor pool restoration, then you'll need to find a correct block. What's the serial number on the oval pad behind the oil filter? You'll aldo be needing to replace the transmission and most likely the transfer case in order to make it more correct.
It's very common to find these engines in g503's....but they are post war civilian swap outs.
Congrats on obtaining the GPW, btw. Where are you located?

For a correct restoration you can also use a factory Ford replacement engine from WW2; recognized by no numbers on the block pad, and an X number and Ordnance proof mark next to the exhaust manifold on the block. One of those is as close as I could get. For a motor Pool restoration you could also use a Willys MB engine; realize that the "Motorpool" was not allowed to replace an engine. Meaning Organizational Maintenance.

Here's an example of a GPW replacement block stamp I'm currently rebuilding for my GPW:

I can just barely make out the Ordnance stamp next to the X; nice.

Better picture of the replacement GPW block number and ordnance marks, for reference:
