Rear seat pan sheet thickness?
Hello
Does anybody know the thickness of the sheet metal used to make the rear seat pan?
Is there a difference between MB and GPW? The seat pans are different, that I know, but what about the thickness?
I tried to measure it on an MB seat and I believe it is less than the 'normal' 1,25 mm (18 gauge?) used on the other panels.
I measure a little more than 1 mm.
I would appreciate an answer.
I am trying to repair/manufacture a pan and doing this in 1 mm sheet metal is easier that 1,25
If successful I will report on this.
Greetings
Hans

Re: Rear seat pan sheet thickness?
When I removed my cracked and broken rear seat pan and made another one, it was 18ga.

Re: Rear seat pan sheet thickness?
Thank you Jon,
That is a GPW one isn't it?
It is very well done. Nice work.
I did buy a replacement pan from a company in Austria (it took a long time to find but thanks to a G member I finally managed) but at that time I did not know that GPW and MB rear seat were different.
The replacement pan is for a GPW. It is indeed 18ga or about 1,25 mm.
I also think that the GPW replacement pans are a little easier to install as they stay outside the frame.
The MB ones are more difficult to make because they stay inside the frame and especially in the corners they are hard to make because of the double curvature.
I will show some pictures later.
Thank you for the input. Now I need somebody who know the thickness of an MB rear seat pan.

Re: Rear seat pan sheet thickness?
Hello Jon
This is what an MB rear seat looks like in the front corner:
This is another one where the pan is removed:
This what I am trying to do with a corner (I will weld it later). As you will notice I am not a metal working specialist and I do not have the right tools to form the corner without cutting the sheet.
Maybe there is a trick? Heat?
Greetings

Re: Rear seat pan sheet thickness?
MB will be exactly the same thickness.. albeit built differently.
Metal can be persuaded to do things with a little heat applied.....

Re: Rear seat pan sheet thickness?
Hello Jon
And this is a picture of the replacement pan that I did buy.
It is still flat but as you can see it is for a GPW rear seat.
It is well made though ... (the groves allow for easier folding of the metal. They need to be welded afterwards I think).
Now I am looking for a GPW rear seat that needs a new pan

Hello Jon,
Nice picture. I am impressed how you document everything... and find it back
The press was for the ribs isn't it? All the rest is 'easy' if you want to replace the GPW rear pan.
Thank you for the info.
Still looking for somebody who did the same with an MB
Greetings
