Hello Gents,
I'm looking for more information on my GPW regarding the correct hood number and where it was built.
I have GPW 211561 with a DOD of July 12, 1944 and I'm trying to find the appropriate hood number. The data plate can be seen at the top of page 22 of the "More Data Plates INFORMATION Required Like THESE PHOTOS" thread, here:
viewtopic.php?f=4&t=111873&start=315
The estimator on Classic Military gives an estimate of "20543866".
Using a torch to burn off upper layers of paint seems to reveal the number: "2**50191" with the asterisks being roundish, but unreadable (see pic). I assume that the unreadable numbers are a zero and 5, yielding a hood number of, "20550191". Would that be correct or a goof up over the years?
For what it's worth the paint layers seem to be something like:
1: School bus yellow - (probably painted by the Duarte, CA school district from whom my father in law purchased it in about 1967
2: Haze/Machine Gray with "US Navy" above hood numbers (see pic)
3: Forest Green - Korean era repaint?
4: Standard OD green, perhaps original.
This thing seems to have spent most of its life in California. Was it built there, too?
Any help you could yield would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks for the reply, Chuck. I was thinking about hitting up Mr Tom directly, but not sure if that's Emily Post.
Well, here are the Frame Rail numbers and Toeboard Gusset numbers thrown in for total effect:
