MB Cylinder Head vs Engine Block Cating Dates

Post by Michael O. » Fri Oct 13, 2017 7:55 pm

A question for those guys lucky enough to have an original and intact MB engine (original head to the engine block): What is the date code relationship between the cylinder head casting date and the engine block casting date? Are the two components within a few days of each other or are they dated a week or more apart? Do the heads have an earlier casting date or are they later than the block casting date? Any cast on the same day?

Thanks in advance!

My MB-MZ-1 engine number 422802 has 5-27 cast, 5-31-44 stamped.

The head has cast 5-30.

7 - 1 block, 7 - 6 head.

My general experience has been head within a couple of days of machining date.

Is it more "accepted" that the head should be cast before or after the machining date, or before or after the engine casting date?

Generally speaking for most of the war the skew between engine casting and machining dates seldom exceeded 1 week. I've seen heads that appear original +/- 2 weeks of the machining date. For an engine with a big skew between casting & machining dates I'd expect the head to be closer to the machining date.
