valve guide removal
Guys,
One more question. Should the valve guides be removed before the block is cleaned, if so is their removal problematic.

Re: valve guide removal
Don't know that it matters. Before or after.
Easy enough to do, since you have the engine disassembled.
Come in from the bottom, through the lifter bore with a drift and drive the guide out , toward the cyl. head side.
I have a driver, like a flat punch. The O.D. is a little smaller than the guide O.D. and it has a pilot on the end that goes into the guide to keep the driver centered on the end of the guide.
Don't know how you will have the block cleaned but if it will be thermal, the heat, from the cleaning operation will loosen the guides a bit. Make them come out easier.

Re: valve guide removal
I have successfully pulled guides in an assembled engine with an all thread 3/8 rod.
Remove the valves.
Put the rod through the guide. Install a nut, that has the corners rounded off so it will go through the block as the guide comes out, on the bottom.
Put a heavy plate over the rod, on top, that will lay on the block to pull against, followed by a couple heavy flat washers and another nut to do the pulling.
Be sure all is well oiled and pull away.
A grade 5 threaded rod and nuts is better. Grade 3 can't take it.

Re: valve guide removal
I avoid the threaded rod pulling trick with GPW-too delicate, especially when the GPW guide is stubborn. Have better luck driving them with the special tools.

Re: valve guide removal
Note the rags packed around the lifters in the first picture.
They are there for a reason.
Plugs the holes so when you drop a spring retainer keeper during removal or installation, it does not end up in the oil pan.

Re: valve guide removal
The rags also help avoid any dust from the valve seat grinding operation from getting into the crankcase.
