Verifying Hardware finishes for a 45MB

Post by Thunderbird712 » Thu Sep 14, 2017 10:53 am

Since the Willys part # does not have the S-X code like Ford identifying the finish I have been doing a lot of reading of old threads, looking through jeep draw, and looking at factory photos. Some hardware I have found threads about that answer my question but I still want to verify I am correct.

Body hardware
Bolt - black phosphate/ Black Oxide finish?
Nut - black phosphate/ Black Oxide finish?
Pal Nut - Cad Plated?
Ext Tooth Washer - Cad Plated?
The Ext/Int tooth washers and flat washers have there finishes listed in the SNL. The one bolt I need help on is the Toe Board Gusset to Frame. The Ford part # shows S7 Cad Plated but Cad plated is not listed in the description. Was there a difference between Ford and Willys?

Fender hardware
Bolt - black phosphate/ Black Oxide finish?
Ext Tooth Washer - Cad Plated?

Fender B/O light hardware
Bolt - Cad plated? (not listed in SNL description but Ford listed as S7) (Probably not a big deal as it might have been painted over)
Nut - Cad plated? (not listed in SNL description but Ford listed as S7) (Probably not a big deal as it might have been painted over)
lock washer - black phosphate/ Black Oxide finish? (Probably not a big deal as it might have been painted over)

Grille
Bolts (to fender and frame)- plain steel? (not listed in SNL)

Hood Catches
Bolt - Cad plated? (not listed in SNL description but Ford listed as S7)

One last thing. Is there a source, drawings, etc. that have been found in which I can look through to help determine the finishes used on MBs? I have seen some engineering drawings in older threads but nothing complete. I don't want to necessarily use the Ford S-X listing in the SNL. Unless it is correct to do so.

Thank you

Remember that the book tells how the fitting was ordered from the vendor, it does not tell you if it would have been painted when the jeep was assembled or not...

O yea understand that. Mainly looking at areas that are known to have not been painted after final assembly like under the body.

http://jeepdraw.com/images/jeepdraw/PAR ... v_%203.xls

That should help you out, it says which bolts are cad plated or parkerized.

Thanks but I have that list already. It does list the Cad plated and parkerized bolts and washers but the list is just the SNL info put into Excel. It definitely saves time scrolling through the SNL though! It still doesn't help with what the finishes were of the list I posted. The info I have listed is from reading old threads and looking at pictures.

Just to clarify my original post I understand most of the bolts got painted during the final assembly overspray coat. Some of the hardware I have listed did get painted on one side. For the most part I have a handle on what hardware did and did not get a coat of paint during the final overspray coat. For example the fender bolts. Since I am trying to do a factory restoration what I am attempting to do is have the correct finish for the hardware. Then the heads of the bolts and washers will get painted. However the backside of the bolt would not have been painted. Other examples are the handle bolts that go into the tool boxes or the body bolts. Yea some areas you may never see but its not really much extra work for me to do this.
