MB/GPW WATER PUMP PULLEY

Post by Joe Gopan » Thu Sep 07, 2017 6:41 am

A word of caution when installing that" period correct" pulley on your MB/GPW Water Pump. Some of these tempting pulleys have been installed and removed many times of their 70+ year history and have lost their "press fit". The result is the fan ruining the radiator. Best to be safe than sorry, choose a tight fitting pulley over the loose fitting one regardless. Don't rely on Loc Tite to cure the problem.
It happens more often than you think.

Thanks Chuck, I missed you. Chuck is a gentleman G503'er who absorbs G-503 knowledge like a sponge and enjoys sharing what he learns with no boundaries.

And here is the evidence - Not from a MB/GPW but from a M38A1.

Day two of the Smokey Mountains Convoy climbing the mountains up to Newfound Gap I heard a new sound from the Jeep, a repeating growling sound. At the pass I opened the hood but could not see anything wrong. The growling continued down the other side of the mountains. I stopped at a traffic light in Cherokee. When I turned left the fan pulley came off and you can see the result:

Has anyone ever welded the pulley on to the shaft to prevent this?

OUCH!

Usually the best cure is a NOS Pulley. A used pulley that has been on too many water pump rebuilds is sometimes noticeable. Don't use loc tite to cure a loose water pump pulley.
The Pulley area gets more of a workout than many realize, worn pulley ID is not worth the gamble.

I would first ascertain if there is any movement by trying to turn or pull on the pulley but you have to remember the fan itself wants to pull air into the radiator which means it wants to move forward so that might be difficult to check out. I don' vote for welding the pulley in place, but I do think 3-4 peenings of the pulley hole where it is attached to the pump would suffice.

Yup...a friend of mine had his fan come off and crash into the radiator once also.
