MB Clutch Control Tube...sams as M-38?

Post by Michael O. » Thu Aug 17, 2017 6:55 pm

Is the MB clutch control tube the same as the M-38 tube or is the M-38 tube inside diameter more narrow? I have an NOS tube that was from a 1953 re pack box but the inner diameter of the tube is apparantly more narrow as it won't allow the clutch control pivot ball to seat.

Just wondering if I have an M-38 tube?

Just checked mine; the M38 clutch tube is the same as the MB; definitely not smaller ID. A1 I don't know.

Well, found the box. I remembered the 1953 date but not the specific description on the box....but now I know. I think my part was replaced into the box because the box reads "WO-805478 Bracket, Bell Crank Upper Assembly" for a G758. This is obviously not that part. It was with a bunch of parts and boxes of parts I saved from the scrapper when a local warehouse closed.

The dimensions and brackets are the same as the original MB and GPW clutch control tubes I have except for the inside diameter....slightly smaller.

This tube is NOS (but for what?) which is why I wanted to use it in my Oct '44 MB. I like using original parts in my restorations but I'll just buy a reproduction tube since this one obviously won't work.

I would machine the ID to fit your clutch pivot. Or machine the pivot to fit the ID.

Unless the "ears" on the clutch control tube you have are at the proper angle to match those of a correct GPW/MB clutch tube I would not bother trying to use this one. Offhand I can't recall what a G758 is but since it isn't a G503....well, you get the idea.

They all use the same clutch parts so something is not right with the OP's pivot stud, or something.
G758 is M38A1, which uses the same parts as WW2 Jeeps.

Hi Mike,

Not sure if this thread will help. If not, it might be a worthy addition to your thread anyway incase someone else in the future finds it!

just make sure you don't buy one from the jeep expert that had a million of them that the lobes were welded in the wrong positions and you end up tearing your hair out because your clutch cable is now too short to fit. True story from the past. And no, George would not exchange it because it was a year before I put the jeep together from a full restoration.

Thanks guys! Maybe it's for a later CJ....too bad. I'll post some photos showing the tube when I get home next week.
