Jeep Carburetor, What do I have here?

Post by 17thAirborne » Sat Jul 08, 2017 4:32 pm

I've read through a lot of 539 posts, and was wondering if this fits the bill for an early GPW. I am sure the upper part with the C stamp is not proper, but I have a spare that has no C mark to use, Just wondering if the rest of this is correct. 407 marked on the base, 9 patent dates

OZ,
The throttle base appears to be 539S (if marked 407 on the bottom)
The choke bracket is likely from a post-war 636 series or later. The wartime clamp loop is not open in the middle.
The bowl-I think-is 596 type,with the bump-out...
The bowl cover markings aren't shown...wartime type is marked simply WO with a circled c.-no part number...

596 is a sort of transition to the 636SA...Chuck Lutz may have to help frame it more closely if he sees this and confirms 596-
Having the 407 marked throttle base is the hardest to find 539S component.
Here is the wartime choke clamp configuration...

Rather than cannibalize some parts to build a 539S from this carb, I would try to find a CJ2A owner (up to March of 1946 before the switch to a 636S) and work a trade. You should get at least a 539 8-patent bowl and a "407" flange that has NOT been drilled for a vacuum port. Since you have a non-"C" air horn that would not be a must-have, but a proper bowl cover would be the icing on the cake.

I think that a rebuildable "407" flange and bowl are the hardest 539S components to find, the bowl cover and air horn not quite so rare. The CORRECT linkage is not too hard to find with the exception of the Throttle Rod.

I have a proper bowl cover and the linkage. I will post images soon. I guess I need to find an 8 patent bowl.

Anyone want to trade this 9 patent bowl for an 8 patent one? :P

Post an offer to swap 596 for 539 parts on the CJ Forum....I'm also trying to trade a bare "200" marked flange for the 596 myself...maybe some early CJ restorer can trade with both of us?

This came with the carb as well. Looks like it is war-time also. Very happy :)
