What is the model number of this Willys
Hello,
Ok just found this Willys somebody is offering me, I don't recognize this model number. Is this a civilian version? It has a all wood dash and I could not find a data plate. I didn't check the frame because it had a wasp nest I wasn't prepared to move. I figured pictures is a good start. Any help is greatly appreciated.
Thanks
Robert

Re: What is the model number of this Willys
All depends on what you want to do with it.
I've personally never heard of a wooden dash jeep. To me it's a $200 beater to put wheels on, find a windshield and seat and see how much longer she can romp around the woods or beach.
There may be someone out there that desires it, but for me it's about $200 in value.

Count up the missing parts before estimating how much it's worth right now? Windshield/seat/dash/gauges/engine parts, wheels/tires/spare tire and carrier/rust repairs/ undoing bubba bumpers and mods/ tailights, wiring, any unknown reasons it stopped in place and began getting stripped like brakes shot/ Titling and County Taxes/ broken drivetrain or did the driver just loose their license and go to jail and the current residents now want the remnants gone....WAW

Ain't much there on a Jeepster type vehicle, could have started out as a Wagon or Truck also. Data plate may still be on driver seat riser.
About the only thing that might be useful on a CJ or MB project is the engine. $50 bucks is tops.

Re: What is the model number of this Willys
It does look similar to a jeepster but the rear quarter are flat unlike the jeepster more toward a standard GPW and compared to a station wagon it would have mounting plates on the rear. This I would have to say is a unique model. I don't think I would seek it but just an interesting find.

Re: What is the model number of this Willys
The grille is definetly that of a station wagon, to me the rest of it looks like an M 38, a bit of a mis match maybe

Re: What is the model number of this Willys
Hello,
This appears to be a home brewed up jeep thingy .
However ............
Take a close look at it, and closer pics if possible, it is always a remote possibility , that it is a prototype Willys that was
fabbed up at the factory as the war ended, and just after.
This is known to have been done, and the designer mentioned it being done as well.
Building new models from left over MB parts and new sheet metal concepts.
Brooks Stevens, was his name.
A very good book on jeeps, with some prototype pics.
The book " Jeep The Unstoppable Legend "
Copyright 1994 ISBN 0-7853-0870-9
Library of Congress Cat card Number 94-66811
Publications International, LTD
USA Printed
Page: 66-67 Interview excerpt
He designed the pick up, the station wagon, the "bubble" observation railroad passenger cars, and the Oscar Meyer mobile among many things.
Is the frame factory built, but not quite the same as a jeep one ?
Does any of the sheet metal look factory built, but not from a standard known vehicle that Willys put out post war ?
Also.... Is it in, or from Alabama, where many prototypes jeeps were sent post war, to be tried out by the University Agriculture test station ?
Several have been discovered and restored that were found there.
With that said, it would be interesting to get better pictures just to see what things really look like !!!!
Remember also, metal and such was in short supply, as well as available stamping companies, until they got things going postwar.
It could have other materials and stuff used if it was a mock up prototype vehicle.
Best Regards,
Raymond

Re: What is the model number of this Willys
The engine could possibly be a wartime MB or GPW. The head doesn't have the horizontal ribs of the civilian jeep. Perhaps the rest is wartime. Check for serial number under the oil filter. If wartime, it should be 'MB'-XXXX or GPW-XXXX.
If so, it could be worth a bit more than $200.

Hello Robert,
As a matter of fact, there is a designer drawing of a concept Willys Jeepster
that looks very similar to the Jeep thingy you posted,
No rear fender flares, just straight metal sides and very similar driver's entry cut out, same grill and hood.
Same book, page 59.
It would be worth a closer look to determine if this is a prototype !!!!!!!!!!!
