New speedo cable question

Post by sam C. » Sun Jun 25, 2017 1:47 am

I bought a new speedometer cable. It has a rubber coating on the exterior. I still have the external part of my old speedometer cable, which is metal. Can I simply pull the innards from the new cable and install in the old cable's exterior? Only reason I have for wanting this, is due to grounding the cable (old cable still has the grounding strap attached) and wanting it to look correct. I don't know that G503s had a rubber coated speedometer cable, did they?
Thanks in advance
Sam

I'm pretty sure they were metal sheathed for the war era.

If the new speedo cable is undamaged could it be returned for credit?
There is no guarantee the new one you haves inner cable length is identical with the old outer cable, so most probably this is not an option, without some modification. It could be too short or too long!
If the old outer is good, unkinked, with no internal damage, a speedo shop will make a new inner cable inexpensively, that will fit correctly.

I thought I bought my new one from Ron, though I'm not positive about that. It's been awhile now. I'll seek out a local speedometer shop and see what they say. The old sleeve is in great shape, other than being dirty. I'd like to keep it and use it.
Thanks!

Just a note to all-The metal cable one that ( upon litigation we can't mention him) is the one you can't remove the inner cable to grease, unless you have the nipple that attaches to your grease gun.

Is there a correct cable available? One that can be greased?

I wouldn't be greasing a speedo cable.
One will likely find a jumpy needle, down the line.
Just smear with oil when fitting the inner to the outer or the speedo shop will advise on the most suitable product.
There are some cable lube specialty ones.

I always prefer to follow the TM''s and the applicable LO.
The TM and LO instructs to remove core, clean, and coat with CG.
Jeep Factory Manual for CJ-2A thru CJ-5 instructs to remove and clean core every 12,000 miles and re lubricate with good quality graphite grease. I have somewhere the AC Cable instructions that advise wipe on lube and not put it on heavy more than 1/3 of the way up.

I hadn't read anything about greasing/lubing the cable, so I was going to do some more research before any actions.
Good advice guys. Greatly appreciated.

Back in that day, the parts stores stocked small tubes of graphite Speedometer Cable Lubricant by AC and others. We never paid much attention to re lubing cables back then unless there was an issue, (noise, jumping needle, etc.).
