Jumps out of gear under power.

Post by Armyspecial » Thu May 25, 2017 5:59 am

Hi all,

My jeep has stared to jump out of second gear during acceleration. A bit annoying as I end up nearly headbutting the steering wheel!!

Obviously something worn in the box but what specifically do you think?

Thanks

Richard

A few things can do this. But it didn't do it before, so my first thought is that the bushing in the second gear has worn to where this can happen. But like I said, this is a good place to start without removing the trans.

Take a look in there and see if you are missing any teeth on the main gear, the cluster gear or the 2nd gear to start with then insure that the 2nd/3rd shift rail is still being controlled by the poppet ball and you can feel it engaging/disengaging as the poppet ball & shift rail should when the shift rail is moved forward and backwards between those gears by hand....do NOT under any circumstances tear that T84 apart at this point in time!

If it's popping out of gear under load, it pretty much HAS to be worn parts (probably the actual trans gears). While the shift tower HELPS hold it in gear, it doesn't do that alone. You MIGHT be able to see something obvious if you pull the shift tower, but I'd be surprised if you will be able to do much about it without tearing down the trans.
