Hey Farrell
I think you will get an answer that anyone with a unaltered gpw or mb be it early or late is going to tell you D shape during ww2. Oil hole positions and shape of hole in the retaining brackets differences for gpw v mb, early v late have also been discussed at length here on 503. :)
regards Nick

I have always considered the round ones as postwar made. However some guys who have round ones on their "perfect" jeep are lobbying to convince the crowd that round ones are correct. After all on a picture the feature is hidden! :D

I have wondered this myself but have seen no concrete evidence to support round bodied catches for either Ford or Willys.

As usual no one puts out any sort of part number or drawing number. :(

Are we discussing the A-2896?

MZ-2 has a different part number, A-3423

We also have a drawing - A-3701-D

Has anyone researched the later CJ or M series part numbers?

To find answers push some buttons on that keyboard!

Here look at this link and the link in it.

The purpose of my post was to show the part numbers involved, including post war CJ numbers.

There are individuals that look at threads that would be interested in looking for the information you want but they need the numbers to do a search. It takes time to search for the numbers and very little time to do a data search to see if a drawing is available.

Farrell....if you go with the "D" shaped no one will object. There may be some truth to the use of round latch tubes in later rebuild programs or retrofits or they may just be post war. Without any documentation to support the round style, I would ask the CJ boys what the early jeeps had on them as that would be past the MZ era anyway.

The 1945 CJ Parts list lists only 663548 for the Catch. It did not take long for the change. The Factory shows 663548 replacing the A-2896 in the 1956 price sheet.
