Hello,

Does anyone know the most common placement/location for the 5th Service Base Shop-Newark Ohio reconditioned engine plates? Thank you.

I have seen engine reconditioning plates riveted to the side of the engine just behind the oil pump and above the oil pan.

Personally I would glue them on and not drill any holes for rivets; these blocks are trouble enough on their own without any extra holes.

I have no idea what would be the right type of rivet for that application, so I will have to find a suitable glue as you suggest, JB weld maybe?

Loc tite makes oil and gas resistant adhesives, there are others. My auto machine shop puts metal tags on the heads with what looks like silicone glue. It won't come off unless you pry them off, which I do.

Do you have the block you removed the plate from? You can take the smooth shank of a drill bit to get the size of the holes from inside the block and then locate some "Drive Screws" or "Drive Rivets" that suit the holes. These Rivets have a little pilot on the end that will help you match the hole.

Hello Ben,

I actually do not have a block with an original plate. Just trying to recreate it for my newly rebuilt replacement engine, so I want to be as accurate as I can..

I may have a stripped block from a CCKW that I can measure the rivet holes in. I need a day or two and I should have some correct new drive screws.

The replacement engine in my GPW has a rebuild tag still attached...I wanted to leave it. I'll post a photo tomorrow.

If I may suggest, I wouldn't drill a block that hasn't already had a rebuilt plate attached. If your block doesn't or didn't have one, then I would leave it be as is. Drilling a block to attach a rebuild tag just for aesthetic purposes isn't advisable and may diminish the value of your block...and you might create some problems while drilling holes in an otherwise sound engine block!

I disagree and have handled a few hundred blocks over the years, never witnessed any shortcomings from a riveted data plate, Cast Iron is pretty soft it will not bother a bit to drill and install drive Screws.

Hello there,

It will be great to see the photo of your original plate. The purpose of attaching one is not purely aesthetic. I was fortunate to find a standard MB block and I would like to have the info attached.. Rest assured, I will not do anything that may damage the block. As for the value, I personally see no difference having a new rebuilt tag on the motor, transfer case or any other component of the jeep. I see it as part of the restoration process... Still, I appreciate all opinions and concerns. Thank you.

Lets play revisionist History for a moment...

If your block was reconditioned by the 5th while in service or by another military service shop it would have a REBUILD tag. On the other hand if your block was a REPLACEMENT block it would be "stock" and not have a reconditioning plate.

You can "create" whichever story you choose to but not ALL engines necessarily had a rebuild tag when put into jeeps while in service.
