Re: Willys vs Ford Seat Padding
There is some confusion out there....the term "rubberized cattle hair" and "cured cattle hair" are both found. The padding I have seen looks more like horsehair (black) in some old cushions. I'm wondering if "rubberized" is a sprayed on item. I know that there are some WWII GI canvas bags that have been "rubberized" so it would seem to be a finely sprayed on substance. What the term "cured" cattle hair is I could not find. In any event, be it horse hair or cattle hair it isn't usually curly and to get it to intertwine like we see original pads it would seem they either treated it with something and heated it to get it to "mesh" or something like that.
I happened to watch "How It's Made" on TV the other night and how they make sheets of FELT for things like boot liners, etc, seems like it might be something like trying to get relatively STRAIGHT animal hair to "curl up" and mesh so as to give the seat some loft and provide a cushion to your butt and back would go along the same lines.
Interestingly enough, a lot of seats that have rotted canvas remnants and moth-eaten zipper herringbone cloth still have a relatively intact "animal" hair pad in them. I can see why shoving a blanket in there prior to the S springs being use would be helpful to avoid long term "jeep-butt"....unfortunately I have also run across different repop cushions using foam in them that have no S springs and they vary from practically NO loft in the foam to a type of foam with very LITTLE cush for your tush.

Re: Willys vs Ford Seat Padding
I'm interested seeing how your seat cushions turn out. If they will be anything like the craftsmanship and quality of your MB and GPW tops, then I see myself lining up to buy a set from you!

Re: Willys vs Ford Seat Padding
I know the early GPWs didn't have springs and had a pocket in the cushions for, possibly, a blanket. My question is how thick was the rubberized cattle hair padding in the seat cushions? Most rubberized hair padding is sold at 1" thick.

Forgot the link.Farrell Fox wrote:Found where? The upper compartment containing the padding is less than 2 inches, even when constructed for springs and padding combined. If we are talking LATE style spring seats, then the overall approximate height is 2 inches.Old Pal wrote:

Re: Willys vs Ford Seat Padding
Again....."rubberized" means the use of rubber.....cured cattle hair does not mean rubber was used....two different processes, two different results. But....remember this: "Rubber shortage" and that's probably why the first style went away.
