Re: Red Jeep
There were overhaul facilities in the USA, too, where all those parts could have been mixed up.

Re: Red Jeep
So I see, Higgins and a few others were involved in rebuilding these.
Tub is now off, and I can confirm it must have been off prior, as the chassis and axles are all red, but the nuts and bolts appear original, with these odd looking locking nuts on the nut heads, and bolts with springs attached. literally everything is gloss red.
90% of this is GPW it seems, with an MB engine, and one MB leaf spring taking up the final 10%.
I'm going to have a hunt and see if I can find where the rebuild plate might have been.
Other than the dash anyone know where these might have been?

I could add other threads ... I believe Lloyd covers the topic in a volume of his book.

Re: Red Jeep
I would think that is some sort of "official" rebuild jeep. I know fire departemtns and other cogernment units, is civil defense, DNR, post office, Indian Affairs, etc., would get first crack at the surplus and paint the vehicles their department colors. But I would not imagine they would take the tubs off and remove engines to do so. Just exterior department colors and markings. So a fire department red or yellow or white jeep would be the exterior and maybe under the hood. But inside tool boxes, gloveboxes, spring shackles, engine mounts, etc? I can't imagine.
And, it is my understanding that most of the aftermarket surplus parts would be Willys, and not Ford. I am under the impression that Willys acquired the surplus Ford parts and used them in the CJ2 and 3 jeeps. So a fire department in the UK getting a surplus MB and then painting the entire jeep red and then rebuilding it with mostly GPW parts seems a bit unlikely. But, not impossilbe.
A rebuild factory using both GPW and MB parts in Eurpoe rather than ship them home seems a likely possibilty to me.
