Well I fired up the torch and did some very preliminary riveting with my new tool and rivet sets
the first batch was less than satisfactory but I'm getting rivet length and technique dialed in

Looking at these photos makes me so happy I'm done riveting my frame. What a pain. Best of luck.

Hi Niblet,

Looks like youve made good progress!

Next time you do some prelim testing, any chance you could take photos of the bucking bars etc in place so we can see how they 'function'.

Also, are you trying for MB or GPW style rivet heads?

This is something i need to (re)do to my 42 GPW. I now have original nice take off GPW bumper plates to replace the 2 lower poor excuse for a repro plate (still, 14 years later) available and the 2 original MB upper plates. I can then take the MB plates off my GPW and put them on my MB which is waiting restoration. So, very interested in how your version works and a cost on the tools etc as I don't have the skills or equipment available to make something like Jon did (unfortunately).

Cheer and thanks,
Ian.

I'm making progress with my technique I just need to figure out some heat management
because I'm warping the material, I used an old lawn mower blade for a heat sink, but I think I need to try a smaller tip
for the torch. but at least the rivets are forming well. I left 1/2 in of rivet protruding from the material and am forming excellent "heads". When Im done I will put together a kit and rent it to others who want to do this

Great idea an the rivets seem to be coming out nicely, however, the shape is a bit too round. GPW rivets are more of a tapered conical shape.

My mistake. In the beginning I took for granted how difficult it is to make rivets look like what you have pictured. Good work.
