What do you use to seal the gaskets?
OK,
So its almost time to put the rear axle back together. I got paper gaskets from RF for the differential cover and the hubs.
They are really thin so I dont think they will create a complete seal if there are any imperfections on my mating surfaces.
I watched a few videos on how best to seal up the diff cover. Its about 50/50 where some say gasket only and others say use a bit of RTV first or silicon. Others say to forget the gasket and just use the RTV.
What is the best way to seal these up?
Thanks
Jon the newbie.

I use Permatex #2 non hardening for everything. Not head gaskets.

Permatex alone or with the paper gasket as well?
Thanks
I found this online and it has made the most sense to me so far.... but what do I know?
1 clean surfaces with brake cleaner
2 apply two beads of rtv around both the cover and housing. one around the outside of bolts and one around the inside. circle all bolt holes as well and make all beads about 1/8" to 3/16" wide
3 put the cover on and snug it down until rtv just starts coming out of the seam, stop tightening
4 let the rtv dry for about one hour if temperatures outside are at least 70 degrees. If its much cooler like in the 50s, your time will be longer
5 torque the bolts
6 let cure 24 hours before adding oil
Thanks

Use Permatex #2 or Permatex #3 on bolt threads that go through the housings, like differential bearing cap bolts. #2 is very good, #3 is almost as good, both are correct.

Re: What do you use to seal the gaskets?
I'm a fan of Permatex #2 also and use it almost everywhere except the engine head gasket and engine manifold gasket. I use copper spray for them. Like Ben says, if used on bolt threads, then the permatex will prevent oil weeping past the threads. It will clean up pretty easily with brake cleaner.

92889 to answer your question, when using Permatex #1 or 2 use your paper gasket also. If using RTV some people don't use a paper gasket.

Re: What do you use to seal the gaskets?
Do you coat both sides with permeated or one surface (either cover or diff housing) then gasket?
Thank you

If you use RTV, make sure it is the gear oil safe type. Locktite #5699 or Permatex #81182 or Mopar/Ford/GM equivealent. Works better than gaskets in most instances.

Re: What do you use to seal the gaskets?
My fingers are still black from todays gasket installs; (on a 230) and no, I don't wear rubber gloves. They take away from the tactile experience of engine building. Like other rubber applications, they detract from the overall experience.
Yes, Permatex on both sides of the paper gasket and on the bolt threads. Like on head studs, on the threads into the block, obviously.

And Permatex #2 and Permatex #3 is still being manufactured and after more than 80 years is still just as effective as it has always been.

Wow, I didn't know it was that old, but that is the only sealer I ever heard of for over 50 years. I always thought "permatex" was the only gasket sealer made. Never bothered to check anything else. It works, and smells good.

Re: What do you use to seal the gaskets?
It was known as Permatex Aviation Form a Gasket thru at least the 60's. I have gotten a lot of it on my fingers over the years.
Do a web search for Permatex Form A Gasket History. It's still an old stand by that works.

Re: What do you use to seal the gaskets?
One more question please.
What oil do I use for the differential? The TM manual says HYPOID and the diff cover says USE HYPOID OIL only. When I went to buy it they asked me what weight and offered me a product called HYPO-80.
What do you use?
I'm near Vancouver BC if that helps, (Same climate as Seattle).
Thanks again
Jon
