Been lurking around here for awhile and this site has been a great help in the restoration of my 1945 MB. Now I have a problem I can't figure out. When I go through the normal sequence of of shifting 123 and then come to a stop I cannot get it into first without going from 3rd to reverse and then first. I even took the top plate off and shifted it with a prybar and had the same problem. I rebuilt the trans with new bearings, seals, top plate etc. , didn't think any of the gears needed to be replaced. I've never rebuilt a t84 but I did about a hundred Muncie 4 speeds when I was a dumb kid that kept breaking them. Here are some pics if that will help. Yes I know the washer is on the bottom of the guide plate. I read that thread in my research and do not wish to reignite WWIII I've tried it both ways and it doesn't seem to make any difference. TIA

Don....
It could be a couple things...
1) post a pic of the guide plate riveted to the bottom of the tower (and are the rivets and the plate TIGHT).
2) post a pic or two of the side of the shift cane where it fits into that plate
3) check to see if the bristol head screw that holds the shift fork for 1st/Rev is loose
Try this:
When you come to a FULL stop, with the clutch pedal down....do a casual four count:
1 - Mississippi - 2 (then shift to neutral)
2 - Mississippi - 3 (hold in neutral)
3 - Mississippi - 4 (then shift to 1st)
That is a bit exaggerated but you get the idea...no shifting into 1st from 3rd too fast....
If the internals have not stopped spinning (cluster) then you will grind the hell outta 1st as it isn't synchronized.

I have had that same problem; replaced the shift plate and that solved my problem Might not solve yours, but they wear and it don't take much to make it do what yours is doing; check the shift shaft end too; they wear too.

Re: Need help with T84
OK, I got the pics you wanted. I also did the MS thing shifting but no joy. Some more info that I should have included. I bought this trans in a box so I have no history on it. When I set the endplay on the output shaft to .006 I could feel some drag on the synchro blocks so I took out a shim and now have .016 endplay. Not sure that any of that is pertinent but too much info is better than not enough. I also wondered if the bottom of the cane might be bent slightly, just enough to throw off the gear position. Just a random thought. I appreciate the help you guys have provided.
