Unusual Transfer Inter gear

Post by Preston GPW » Sun Aug 21, 2016 3:08 am

Hi all. Can anyone help to identify this gear out of my transfer case please.
After stripping my transfer case for a rebuild I found the intermediate gear was much larger in diameter than a standard gear. The gear measures 6-1/16" Dia and has a ratio of 5.58-1. the gear also runs on two taper roller bearings instead of two standard races. Their is no thrust washers fitted to the end of the gear the bearings have been shimmed up under the outer race for a shimmed fit, which is a most unusual way of doing things. the shaft holding the gear is a standard Dia but instead of being held in place with the metal tab and bolt, mine is threaded on the end and held with a nut. (See Pics.)

Ive spoken to a local guy who has been rebuilding boxes for years, and also to Greaham and Amanda @ Jeep Parts but nobody has ever seen this mod before.

Your transfer has been modified by an Intermediate Gear Kit with tapered roller bearings.
These kits including the threaded on both ends shaft, new Intermediate Gear, Tapered roller Bearings with Races are intended to eliminate the transfer whine and have been available over the decades from the suppliers of Jeep performance parts. Al Brass has one in his G-503 transfer.
It is not a standard JEEP or Spicer part.
Advance Adaptors, Rancho Jeep and Dick Cepek come to mind.

I've done this mod on a number of Jeeps, the last one using an Advance Adapters kit. The AA shaft kit is not threaded both ends as are none I've run across. One I did in the late 60's on my Jeep was not a kit but tapered bearings shimmed to pre-load slightly then using the standard shaft.
It is a very good reliabilty/longevity modification rectifying the only real transfer case is weak/problem area.
Not sure about the gearing but ez to change back to standard if not currently & using the recommended modification you currently have with tapered bearings.

You likely have an after-market "rock crawler" lo-range gear set. These are popular with the off-road crowd for high-load low-speed crawling. Generally providing a final 3.15:1 (or so) lo-range ratio.

The intermediate gear has 39/23 teeth, which is not factory for MB or any CJ. How many teeth on the other 2 gears?

5.58 is not a ratio, possibly a date.

The interior top of the transfer case might be ground away a bit for intermediate gear clearance.

Thanks for the response. The other gears have 19/37 teeth and the top of the casing has been modified with a cover plate to allow the larger dia gear (see pics)

from what I understand the rock crawler gearset is for the latest version of the transfer case and won't fit the WW2 case at all. but if you have the 3:1 gearset somehow count your blessings. the kit is pricey and you'd enjoy it if the jeep is used in parades.

For interest... this is the shaft that is supplied in the Advance Adapters intermediate shaft kit. The taper bearings are included too. You have to get your intermediate gear counterbored to take the bearing cups (as can be seen in some of the earlier pics in the thread). Adjustment is made by means of the castle nut on the end of the shaft (no shims).

Bad news is for those with a standard 3/4" intemediate shaft is that the kits from AA are only available for the bigger shaft sizes. This one is a 1 1/4" shaft which I fitted in an Hotchkiss M201 transfer box and it works very well.

Good luck

Slight deviation from the topic, but I stumbled on an unusual NOS intermediate gear. It's designed for postwar cj-2a transfer case gear ratios, but still uses the 3/4" shaft.

Those, w/the 39/23 intermediate, give a lo-range ratio of 3.3:1

Perhaps not today, but they WERE once made for D-18 w/3/4" shaft.

That's p/n A-15042, used only on the earliest CJ-2A w/3/4" shaft D-18 (up to s/n 24196, March 13, '46).

I got it with the idea of grinding it to fit an Advance Adaptors kit, but it seems too unusual to do that. I'd be happy to trade for an equivalent 1.125" gear if somebody can use this one.

If I had one to trade I would, but I don't. OTOH, if you decide to sell it, please let me know. I don't NEED one, but a spare is always nice to have.
