Re: How rough should the ride be
I think that it's important to remember that these vehicles are trucks, not passenger cars. A firm ride (particularly on rough surfaces) probably means that your suspension components are in good shape!
My uncle, a WWII vet, drove a jeep as his primary job in France, in the US 66th Infantry Division. He told me that anyone who spent a great deal of time in jeeps ended up with hearing loss and hemorrhoids. And these were young men!
A local museum has a running WWII MB. It rides very nicely, but it also wallows, steers imprecisely, leans excessively in corners, and dives under hard braking. It's suspension is worn, in other words. My MB has a very firm ride and none of these problems. All I can do about the ride is to carry no more than about 27 psi in the tires, and add weight in the form of passengers or cargo.

Gabriel Classic shocks for the G503 part numbers are as follows:
Front: 739014
Rear: 739007
If you search Gabriel you can find the 739007 (82007)
I did not find the 739014 (82014) listed however.
I found the numbers on my Gabriels I installed around 2001 I think. Here is a reference to the box numbers and part numbers:

Re: How rough should the ride be
PS ...read Joel's post about the front springs....I agree with him in that yours don't SHOW any arch when installed like some off-road vehicle and shouldn't. They should not have a NEGATIVE arch to them, but that's how they look unless someone has been messing with them or attempting to re-arch them.
Your springs may have been messed with previously by a well-intentioned Bubba. Factory GPW 8-leaf fronts should have the NUTS on the clamps to the pass side on BOTH front springs.
The ride is rough, it ain't no Lincoln Continental or Mercedes....

Sorry I'm from Europe. What side is the pass side, steering wheel side or passenger side and by clamps you mean the small clamps that hold the springs together? So do you think the springs have had their day?Chuck Lutz wrote:PS ...read Joel's post about the front springs....they don't SHOW any arch when installed. Re: How rough should the ride be
Pass side = passenger side.
Each spring has FOUR of those "U" clamps with an "F" marked bolt through them. Each "U" is riveted to the spring leaf it is located on.
No...your springs are typical and unless they show a NEGATIVE arch to them that neither nor Joel or I can see....I believe we both think yours are OK.

Re: How rough should the ride be
Study some WWII photos of 1941- mid 1944 MB/GPW's and note the flat appearance of the front 8 leaf springs, it's a Jeep thing.

Re: How rough should the ride be
Your jeep looks nice, and the springs look normal; I think you are expecting too much from what is, by now, antique technology. We all got soft from twenty first century suspension systems. You should ride in my Power Wagons that have no shocks, and have so many spring leaves that I forgot how many. A lot.

If you were going very very slowly, you might have been going too slow for the suspension to work, absorb the road irregularities and smooth out the ride. What was your speed in miles per hour when you were going very very slowly?

Not sure really. I was more concerned not getting thrown out. Probably 10 - 15 mphFred Coldwell wrote:Wocha:Wocha wrote: This was the first time out and I was going very very slowly

Thanks for the praise. Here are a couple of photos of the completed jeep.Ben Dover wrote:Study some WWII photos of 1941- mid 1944 MB/GPW's and note the flat appearance of the front 8 leaf springs, it's a Jeep thing.

All the numbers and markings you can see are correct and were found under numerous layers of paint except the A-3 which I had to make up as one of the rear bumperettes was missing as was the front bumper.

Re: How rough should the ride be
I'll take it no matter the ride.
If you choose to attempt lubricating the spring leaves, just try to do it between the 3 or 4 longer leaves as that is where most of the flexing takes place.
If anyone has bought NOS Surplus W.O.F Springs they will notice the graphite oozing from between the leaves. Jeeps with these W.O.F. springs ride like a baby carriage.

Very clean looking jeep. I see you have turn signals incorporated with your rear lights and separate front one's. Is this a mandatory requirement in Spain ?

No it's not mandatory for historic vehicles but for safety sake and the fact that drivers in Spain are not the best, I thought it wise.
