Working on the MB John? Do you think its the original one to the jeep?

Interesting crack next to the date code, i haven't seen a lot of transmissions, but the ones i have seen, i cant say i remember a crack there.

What will it take to convince you to do a rebuild thread the likes of which you did such a fabulous job for the GPW with?

Cheers,
Ian.

Finally! After finishing a home renovation for Julie, I am now allowed to start the MB.

The engine, transmission and Transfer Case are out of the chassis and the body has been lifted

Plan is to have Simon do the new body, while I crack on with the rest.

I thought Id get the Gearbox/Txfr case finished first and put them into storage and then start on the axles and chassis second.

Looks like I'll need a lot of parts for the the T18/T84 :-(

John...if that is in fact a crack at the top of the case near the date code....it might be a reason to consider getting another case to rebuild. How far down the side of the case does the crack continue on? Otherwise perhaps getting the crack fixed could be attempted. If the crack extends down the side (magnafluxing would tell the tale) then it may not be possible to use any of the more common solutions to fixing say a cracked block?

I would not want to use a cracked case and spend the time and money on it and know that it has a "weak spot" that might cause the case itself to fail. With the T84 essentially serving as the "rear motor mount" and carrying the weight/torque of the motor back to the T84 I would worry about that after the rebuild was done.

Worth considering...

Hi Chuck,

I have two cases, one GPW and one Late MB that I can use; both need some attention.

The GPW case has a small crack above the top threaded hole for the bearing retainer (640017), and the MB case has the small crack near the date code.

The MB had a rough life, though this owner is unlikely to take it anywhere more demanding than a memorial parade and club run.

Hopefully I can find a specialist welding company that can give them a zap and keep them running a bit longer.
