Hip pads

Post by Darren Maudsley » Thu Mar 26, 2015 2:07 pm

G`day all. I`m putting my hip pads together, what should the foam thickness be compressed to when I glue the canvas on. The new foam is about 2in thick , looks odd at that thickness, I`ve looked at a few photos on the net & can`t tell what it should be. thanks Darren

You will know when you put your seats in as the pad has to fit between the seat and the tub wall; about 1.5 inches or so; mine touch the seat backs. I compressed the foam and glued the canvas cover on.

Hello Darren,
here are 2 cropped images from the Life archive mid 1942. They will give you some idea of the relative thickness and appearance.
cheers
Bill.

You may want to make a trial fit on the passenger seat side as that is the one that will rub against the frame as the seat is tilted forward to allow passengers in the rear. If your passenger seat is a little too far right of center or has bent to the right a little, it will rub agains that hip pad every time you move the seat. In my opinion, they are more for apearance that a practical s air bag, so err on the side of too thi rather than too thick.

I made mine so they rub the seat frame; that way, they do look the same no matter how thick they really are. Mine look like the ones in the 1942 picture. So don't worry about how thick they actually are.

I have NOS in my MB, checked a spare NOS and they are 2" Thick at the edge where the seam is and puffed up to 2-1/4" in the center.
I'll try to post a pic later.

Cool NOS pics. I stuffed mine tighter than those. Could the old foam be deteriorated? Or were they made loose?

I don't believe all were padded with foam, I can remember seeing filler covered with horsehair. It's been too many years since I vave seen a used one to inspect. The original Willys Factory Drawing would clear this up in an instant.

That makes sense; horsehair. I have not had a horse for 50 years. Not since they invented the automobile.

I have one NOS WiLlys hip pad and one NOS GPW pad still wrapped in paper with packaging label. They both have minor differences. For example the thread color is different.

And there is a good chance that there are minor differences duck and thread in NOS replacements that are not OEM.
