Head Gasket Sealent UK

Post by Armyspecial » Sat Sep 13, 2014 5:33 am

Wondered what other UK Jeep owners are using when installing head gaskets. Can't seem to get Copper spray a gasket over here?

Thanks

Back in the day, a brush on shellac was used but that stuff was nasty.
After the shellac days, hi temp aluminum spray paint was used.
I would keep looking for a copper coat spray although I am not sure that is not just shellac with copper powder in it ??

Permatex High Tack spray is a good alternate. Am sure that Permatex Products are available in UK.

Hylomar is also used, it should be available in the UK, it originated there!

I have used the Permatex copper spray and I have installed them dry. Same (good) results. Not just on L134s. If you have pitting on your head or block, then a sealer might be worth it, but if the surfaces are smooth, I no longer bother. Last 134 I did, I did not use sealer. And, originally, it was not used.

We used to use 'silver frost' paint that contained aluminium particles.

If Copper Spray is not available, Permatex Hi-Tack spray is next best. Some of the Victor Gaskets had a coating which gave the gaskets extra sealing. If good gasket is installation procedure is followed there should be no seepage. The seepage is usually due to uneven cylinder head surface or from the threads in the deck not being sealed. The threads for the studs or bolts are directly into the coolant.

Hi,
I thought no sealant should be used on headet gaskets. I use original gpw gaskets on wich I apply a thin coat of grease. Works great, no seapage. Got this advice from a reknown jeep resto company in Holland.

I use "Wellseal" used by Rolls Royce, excellent seal stays sticky and comes apart easily, you can get it from any motor factors

Seems to be a bit of an unknown....to seal or not to seal. Quite like the grease idea. Anyone see any negatives with this idea?

I don't like the idea of grease.
Follow what the gasket manufacturer indicates/recommends & fit the gasket with TOP to the top.
Replace stretched head studs or bolts with new ones & forget about all that F stuff, unless you are looking to have continual blown head gaskets down the track.
Alway use sealant on all 'chased' clean threads & be aware that most modern gaskets will weep for a day or two, even after your re-torquing regime.
Don't lose any sleep over this fact of life & the weeping WILL STOP of it's own accord, so don't go pouring any of those concoctions into the cooling system.
