Tranny leak

Post by Glancy » Thu Sep 11, 2014 5:49 am

Hi all,
I hope I can get some help with this. Had my tranny repaired at a supposed Willys expert. Has leaked ever since. Not just a few drops but a steady stream coming the bottom of the bell housing when stopping. You can follow the drops where ever I've been. I am wondering if the front shaft seal that was installed is adequate. I have attract he'd photos of what that seal looks like. Any help would be a lifesaver. Thanks.

It appears he may not be expert enough. The OEM Cork Seal, if installed with care, will not leak. The seal depicted is typical of what happens when the rubber and felt T-90 front seal is installed in the T-84.
There are other sources of leaks to check for, the WO-637503 CUP, oil retaining, that is installed at the front of the case at the 2nd and 3rd shift rail may not have been installed, and there may be wear in the hole for the countershaft at the front.

The bad front seal is only part of the problem. Almost for sure, you have oil transferring into the transmission from the t-case. If this is happening, after a drive if you check the oil in the transmission and t-case, you will find that the trans is way overfilled, and the t-case is underfilled. Once the oil fills to a certain point in the transmission, it will leak out of the front seal.

Here's a link to a post I made a few years ago on how to cure the oil transfer:

I see in the photo that the Main Gear and bearing have come OUT of the front of the case. If any of the 13 roller bearings that fit into the back end of it have come loose when the tip of the Main Shaft has pulled out of them.....you may not be able to reassemble this transmission without tearing it apart.

If the transfer of gear oil from the T/Case was the reason it was flowing out the front of the case and out the bellhousing....you should replace the rear bearing with a Sealed Both Sides bearing and consider one for the front as well if in fact you have dislodged the roller bearings necessitating a tear down anyway.

If you use the T90 style gasket up front...cut it in half.

Look up Marty's photo tutorial about using sealants to stop any leaking when assembling the trans/t-case.
