Hello, I recently bought a 1944 GPW and have ran into some problems, the most urgent one presented itself just today. I was driving but then I ran out of gas, after towing it back to my house, I went to the gas station and filled the 5 gallon jerry can from the back of the jeep and poured it all into the gas tank. Even with the 5 gallons, the jeep refuses to turn on and I have no idea why. I should also mention that there is a switch on the dash that when flipped changed the fuel amount on the temperature gauge, when flipped to the left, it shows the tank at about 60%, when flipped to the right, it shows the tank completely empty. I did some research to try to find what this switch is for and if it haw anything to do with the car not starting even though it has gas, but I found nothing. It may just be a modification to the jeep after 70 years of changing hands, but I wanted to ask the people will experience
Thanks Guys!

Re: Gasoline Problem
What does this mean?the jeep refuses to turn on
I doubt anyone would know what switch you are talking about & guessing won't help you or anyone else.
FIRSTLY DIAGNOSE....
Do you have spark?
Do you have fuel to the carburettor?

Re: Gasoline Problem
Possibilties at this point are considerable.
Since this is a new jeep to you and the rest of use, first we need to figure out what you have, I know, a 44 GPW, but what is the switch and why it makes the temp gauge, which should be mechanical and unaffected by the ign switch, change readings.
Not many original switches on a 44 GPW. An ignition switch, a light switch and a blackout switch in the upper left corner of the dash. If the toggle switch you refer to has replaced the original ignition switch, the fuel gauge would move back and forth as you toggled the switch on and off. This is normal and I would think you would want the toggle in the position that makes the fuel gauge show a reading to get the engine to run.
If you ran out of fuel, it would take a bit to get the fuel primed back to the carb, once the fuel lines and filter ran dry. The fuel does not take a direct path to the carb. More like a scenic route. The line goes from the bottom of the fuel tank, across the tub floor to the passenger side of the jeep, up the right side of the firewall to the fuel filter, then back down along the inside of the right fender, across to the right side of the engine behind the generator, around the front of the engine to left front of the block and the fuel pump and finally up to the carb. What a trip ! Would take a bit to prime all this up.
Like the others said, first you have to figure out what is broke. Then you know what to fix.
Pull the coil wire and hold next to the block. Crank the engine and see if you have spark. Don't get bit.
Loosen the fuel line at the carb. Got fuel ?
How far did you drive before the engine quit ? Just far enough to get water or bad gas ( seperated ethanol) to the carb ??
Elementary my dear Watson. All part of the fun of owning and trying to drive an old jeep.

Re: Gasoline Problem
Flipped to the Left and Flipped to the Right sounds like the Ignition Switch to me. Flipping to "left" appears to be the clockwise or "on" position.
