RESTORING 1945 MB questions for the experts

Post by Corne Lauwerijssen » Tue Jul 29, 2014 1:39 pm

Hi guys,

I have some questions about my restoration.
Lets tell something about my jeep. Its a ITM rebuild jeep, so DOD and chassisnr are unknown.. It has a late march 1945 ACMII body.
With lots of Ford parts and just a few Hotchkiss parts, but really a few! I would like to restore her as a WW2 motorpool jeep, but close to factory condition.
Right know the axles, gearboxes and engine MB are rebuild. So the chassis rolls again, only have to get the engine running.
Sheetmetal work is allmost finished, doing the final touches know. Like drilling the correct holes and wellding the wrong ones.. And then it will go back to the sandblaster.
In the meantime i have been collecting all missing parts and im allmost there.

But still having some mindbreaking questions! Hope some could help?\

Some questions have been answered allready, thanks!

3. Are there repro autolite coils available?

5. Indicator light switch. I dont want it on steeringtube. I want to keep it as original as i can. Any good ideas about this?

6. Indicatorslight in the blackoutmarkerlights with orange glass in the cover, how sells these?

7. The floorcovers, do i have to use felt for these. The only sell rubber??

8. Is there canvasstrap between the fenders and the body?

9. Did my body have the two post wire terminal behind the aircleaner?

10. Did my body have the radiofilterette?

Well this was it so far:D'
Thanks, Cornéuwe

Check the jeep draw page. It has a ton of information.

I can attempt to answer a few of your questions Corne:

3. There were some quite nice looking repro autolite coils available a while ago. These have now been sold and there are apparently no plans to make any more due to problems using the auto-lite name I think. I've had a couple of reports that they didn't work for long so it might not be a great loss. I've seen a couple on ebay being offered as originals.

5. I've seen a neat wireless indicator system that attaches with magnets. Lost the link though - sorry.

7. They had definitely moved away from rubber seals by 1945. Asphalt impregnated felt/fibre is what you need - available here. He isn't quick on delivery though!

8. Yes, part numbers A-3158 and A-2662 front fender to cowl side panel anti-squeak upper and lower. Available from Ron and the above link.

10. No large radio filterette under the dash by 1945. This was replaced with a bunch of small capacitor/filter units attached to various components like the starter and ignition switch.
A great explanation can be found here: http://www.1945gpw.com/a-41-G503_WWII_1 ... ssion.aspx
