Occupation forces jeep tires

Post by John R. » Mon Jul 28, 2014 11:54 am

I seem to recall seeing pictures of USA occupation forces jeeps without the NDT tires. Anyone know what would be a correct 1945 treaded tire for this impression?

There are indeed many photographs of jeeps with civilian style tires and not all during the post war occupation period. There are many photographs of British SAS jeeps in North Africa with civilian tread. I believe they would source tires from the local economy or supply sources if that became easier...especially during the post war period. I can't give you specifics or a bone-fide proof to this hypothesis, but it seems quite plausible. If you are portraying a jeep during the immediate post war period, then civilian style 6.00x16's wouldn't be out of the question. Perhaps it was a matter of "comfort" since the civilian road tread might ride smoother? No more need for "tactical" tires during the occupation? A commander's preference perhaps? Please understand that my focus is war time factory production standard equipment. I probably answered your question with several more...but I hope this helps.

One has to undestand that after WWII there was tremendous shortage of rubber = tires, in Europe at least. They put on what was available.

There is photographic evidence that enemy tires were mounted on US Vehicles.
