Carburetor Accelerator Pump Question
I have an almost new accelerator pump for my Jeep carburetor. While I was restoring my carburetor I decided to re-plate the accelerator pump plunger part. Well, the plating solution caused the leather boot/plunger to shrink and become hard.
I have soaked it in motor oil for about 6 hours and nothing changed. I now have it soaking in Linseed oil and I plan to soak it overnight.
If the soak in linseed oil does not soften up the leather, do any of you have a suggestion as to what I might soak it in to soften the leather and hopefully make it come back to its original size?
Or is there no way to soften the leather boot/plunger?
Any thoughts anyone?

Re: Carburetor Accelerator Pump Question
Hey Jerry
The accelerator pump is one of the most important parts on a carby.
If it looks at all dodgy or you are not 100% happy with it, get a new one. They are as cheap as chips.
Don't risk it

Re: Carburetor Accelerator Pump Question
My guess is, you have cooked your boot and it will never come back.
But if you do find something that rejuvenates dried leather, bottle it and sell it as skin lotion.
You will be a millionaire !

Re: Carburetor Accelerator Pump Question
You guys are right. Nothing that I soaked it in softened it. So, I replaced it.
I hate that because it was a nearly new pump and I just wanted to brighten up the plating. Should have left it alone.
The problem with getting a new one is you have to buy a whole carburetor kit and for over $30.00 thats too much for me. About the only thing that really needs replacing when you restore your carburetor is the accelerator pump, the gaskets and the float needle. Wish I could find a cheaper kit that just included these parts.

Re: Carburetor Accelerator Pump Question
Marty,
Thanks for the info. I went to the website and they came up with three stores that are somewhat close to me. For the store that is in my town (Crestview) it came back with "not currently available" but there are two more stores I can try.
Anyway, thanks for the tip. I will follow up on this and if I can find one and the price I will post the info.

They usually are pretty good at special ordering parts, might take a week, though. Walker is the manufacturer, you might try them direct, too.

Re: Carburetor Accelerator Pump Question
That's wonderful, doesn't mean anything. I know the NOS part was made in St.Louis, MO USA. I think the chances are better than even that the Walker parts are not made in the USA. All that aside, why take chances when the NOS part is available and you have to chase after this probably discontinued part. Do you think the repro is superior? I don't know why I am wasting my time, do what ever you want.

No offense meant or taken to your post, thanks for the e-bay heads-up.
Just posting the link to Walker, as they also show other parts someone may need.
