Re: Restoration of Old Pal - GPW*13551
My new data plates arrived from the Netherlands. I even got my new data plate for my early hinged Tobe filterette that I'm still looking for. I'm trying to get all of the stuff I'm sourcing out (data plates, gauge restoration, canvas, etc.) completed so I'm not waiting on anyone when I'm ready for it.
Here is my original:

Re: Factory Class Restoration of Old Pal - *GPW 13551*
I'm trying to figure out what the correct steering box is for Old Pal. I think a Ross is correct, although Jeepdraw indicates only Ford boxes were used. I know this topic has been discussed before. The box on the left is the one I pulled off of Old Pal. It looks like someone went crazy with a sledge hammer to try and get the seal to stop leaking. Since I'm doing a factory class, the bashed in portion is less than desirable. The castings are almost identical except the one on the left has a "1" and the one on the right has a "2" cast into it. The one on the left has additional numbers stamped.
Also, the plug on the right has a pin running down the center. The one on the left does not.
Any help and suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

The one on the right looks to be CJ as the horn wire came out the bottom of the box.

You may be correct. I have another one that I'm sure is CJ; a little different though.chasendeer wrote:The one on the right looks to be CJ as the horn wire came out the bottom of the box.

It's been a while since I've made any significant progress on this project. Life gets in the way. I did make it down to Camp Petaluma for the day looking for my filterette and 3/8 x 1 NF bolts. I found two of the six bolds that I needed. More important, I found a filterette:
Now I just need to find some time to work on the tub so I have something to bolt it to.

I saw that filterette there and the price was more reasonable than those that have sold on eBay recently. Glad you found one.

Thanks. I kept my eye out and was asking around for an early bellhousing for you. No luck. I heard you were there.Michael O. wrote:I saw that filterette there and the price was more reasonable than those that have sold on eBay recently. Glad you found one.

After several months of no progress, I finally got most of the front axle completed with the exception of a few missing parts and unanswered questions.
1.) Where exactly does the axle tag go? I don't think I have any photos of it before I took apart the axles.
2.) Which zerk fittings are straight and which are 90 degrees? Any 45 degrees? Where do I find replacements without the center ball?

I found this on Al Brass' GPW. Looks like an axle tag.

Hello Old Pal
I have all ways found the tag to be mounted across the joint of the oil seal casings just as you have noticed in Al's picture. All of the ones I have/had have been stamped RZEPPA JOINT most of them, also have a nice little script F in the middle beneath the wording I think it was most likely a factory thing. And no doubt many were discarded whenever the seals got changed as they serve no particular purpose that I can see. Hope that helps or maybe it's more parts you have to find
regards Nick

I should have added that all the axles with the joint tags also had fitted on the diff cover, the little steel tags with the diff ratio stamped on them.

There's always something to miss. The axle ratio tag must've disappeared over the last 70 years. I wonder if there was a tag for both the front and rear axles.nick peters wrote:Old Pal
