Late Willys and Ford both used studs vs. bolts for head.
Same block casting # as my original June '45 GPW.

Engine looks ok, but did they come with Gens and starters? The generator data plate looks like it went through ww2, on a jeep. Not new. The SNL shows the engine assy as being complete, ready to run, with generator and starter. I answered my own question, but the one on epay clearly shows a used starter, at least to me. I suppose someone could have robbed it and replaced it with a used one in the past 70 years. It's possible.

I smell a rat. A nice collection of original parts for sure but not a NOS, never run replacement engine IMO.

Why no before shots? An untouched crated engine would probably fetch more from a collector.
Why repaint the intake manifold black and the exhaust manifold silver? Original paint would be pretty intact if the engine hadn't been used.
Why rebuild the oil pump - what is there to "dry" out inside there!
Not sure the air horn looks original
Carb body looks to have fuel stains to me
All data tags look too worn for an untouched engine
Image 52 shows distinct grind marks on the boss - suspicious

Nice rebuild job though.

Dave shoot down to the auction area and read the owners comments.
Engine was in museum collection and had been resprayed over the original finish.
I prefer my NOS stuff as is even nasty.

The owners comments seem to contradict himself,at least in my opinion. I agree, the starter, generator, distributor,do not appear NOS. And why would anyone devalue a find like this by dissembly, and repainting??? I too am suspicious.

that's my opinion, too.
That is no NOS engine!! That is a mistake!!
I suppose the engine never was built in a jeep (that's right) but was used as a pump- or welding- or generator engine. The engine was totally restored, some NOS GPW parts added, some used parts with wrong colour added (starter, generator, distributor, fuel pump, oil pump and others); the carb ellbow is a repro part (to big for an original part). The oil filter is FRAM, the stickers are PUROLATOR.
Maybe the engine is well restored but it is no crated NOS engine and that's why I am so disappointed about it!!
I also have a display clinic :D engine, but the colours and parts all are right:

DocUwe, very nice display.

You fellows really need to include the owner of the engine in question in this discussion, he is a forum member.

It would have been a plus to sell it in its undisturbed original patina. It would also look better installed as it looked when crated. A GPW crated engine does not look that sharp.

Doc, you aren't married are you? Wives (at least the ones I have had) take a dim view of engines in the house. Personally I love it.

I am married with a wife who likes (sometimes) jeeps
Fact is, I have had to persuade her with a smiling face, promising to mop the engines and trannys by myself and so on. And I said that would be good for healing my patients. Doc
