Just finished rebuilding my T-84….but the rear bearing on the output shaft just doesn't look right….
Am I over thinking this?
I think it may be sticking to far out…...

The bearing sits into the recess on the T84 and the recess on the T18....but...when new they are very tight on the main shaft. When the T18 is added and the nut/washer on the gear inside the T18 is TIGHTENED, it will be moved to the right location.

Look up Marty's excellent tutorial on SEALING things on the T84/T18.

Subdude,
Looks ok.As you know by now,the rear bearing is retained by the T case housing.If the bearing wants to slip out you can wire it up to the case bolts until the T case is ready to marry to the T84.Here is how mine looked at that point.Make sure your mainshaft/synchros are spaced correctly.Just read Chuck's post but thought if you saw another unit it might help.

Your second picture looks like the bearing is not seated inside the trans case, sometimes caused by a improperly positioned syncro or one of the bearings loose inside the input shaft.

The rear bearing should fit all the way forwards into the shallow recess, and there should still be a minimal amount of forwards play in the main shaft with the bearing seated into the trans case before you bolt it on to the t-case. Once the t-case is installed and the nut on the gear tightened, it will pull the shaft back tight against the rear bearing. Look at the gap between the 3rd gear syncro ring and the mating cogs on the input shaft. The gap should be about the same as the gap between the second gear syncro rings and the cogs on the second gear. The syncro slider should be 100% engaged over the input cogs and the input shaft should be easy to turn when the trans is in neutral (The syncro bras ring should release) when it's set up correctly, if it's not, it may not hold in third under load.

Ron has shims if you need to adjust the end play on the shaft to get the third gear syncro ring close enough to the input gear. They fit between the oil slinger and the bearing, which brings the main shaft assembly forwards in relation to the input gear.

I would recommend using a double rubber sealed rear bearing to help prevent oil transferring between the t-case and the transmission, now is the time to install it!
