Re: Universal Rifle Rack Questions.
I acquired a rifle mount that was represented as coming with the canvas bag. While it did, indeed, come with a zippered fulll canvas bag, my research indicated that this bag had nothing to do with the rifle mount, but was intended to carry the carbine around in. While it could be adapted for use with the rifle mount, it will not work on a thompson with the mag in and it is not the "official" rifle mount canvas cover.
It is my understanding that that cover was slit along the rear and had two metal strips along the back for attaching to the mount itself or the windshiled brackets.
Don't know if the OP's bag is the correct reifle mount cover or just a canvas carbine bag.
I cheated and mounted my rifle mount to the M31C pedistal mount with a thompson in it facing between the drivers and passengers seat. Worm clamped it to the mount and covered the clamps with webbing for appearance.

Re: Universal Rifle Rack Questions.
Canvas cover was zippered and stapled to the holder, many of you have Rifle Holders with the staple holes along the flat edge from when they had staples.
The covers have a way of disappearing because of preference or dry rot.

No alterations necessary for various positions on MB/GPW windshield brackets.

Re: Universal Rifle Rack Questions.
I picked up a Universal just like yours with canvas bag, zipper, etc. However, mine had NO holes for the mounting bolts to go through on the canvas. Do you know did these come with the canvas perforated from the factory?
I carefully took it off and saved the metal mounting strip because I didn't want to cut holes in the canvas.

Bump
Anyone? I find it odd there are no holes in my canvas cover because it then makes it impossible to mount! Mechanics, or whomever, for any vehicle application would have to cut holes in these themselves.

Re: Universal Rifle Rack Questions.
Can we kinda summarize this up a little? Please help me understand this rifle canvas cover subject. Correct me if I am off course.
It is my understanding that there are at least two major type of canvas covers that are being discussed. One, is a solid zippered cover that is intended for the rifle only. It has NOTHING to do with the universal mount. It is for field use.
The other is also a zippered canvas cover, but it is totally slit along the bottom of the cover and has two thin metal reinforcement strips along the open bottom to strengthen where it is stapled to the sides or bottom of the actual universal mount. This allows the bottom of the mount to be mounted to the brackets.
So, closed bag for rifle only and open bottom cover for use with the mount.
Is this correct? And, that those that are trying to figure out how to punch holes or mount the solid bag type cover have the incorrect cover for use with the mount?

Re: Universal Rifle Rack Questions.
Yes, you got it;. Here is how I look at it; the canvas carbine covers are fairly common and are even being reproduced (thinner canvas). There is a longer M1 Rifle cover too but they are even more rare. They fit over the carbine only and are not nearly big enough to go over the entire rack. I have several of them. The ones made to fit OVER the entire rack, are rare as hen's teeth and you will never see one anyway.

Re: Universal Rifle Rack Questions.
So the pics above of my cover. This cover has no holes anywhere in it. It was stapled to the universal rifle rack just like the pics from Chuck Lutz. I removed the rack from the cover because I did not want to cut holes in the cover in order to mount the rack to my G503. This is why I'm puzzled. It definitely was original and while I don't have the measurements on my cover I can tell you that it is much longer than the rifle rack inside.

Re: Universal Rifle Rack Questions.
Here are a few more pictures of the cover.
It's 50 inches in length. It has a leather loop on the end.
Now I wonder if I should return this cover to the rifle rack or not if it is rare.
