Original Master Cylinder?

Postby Fat Albert » Tue Jun 12, 2012 7:00 pm

Hello All... I just removed what I believe is the orginal master cylinder from my '43 Mb. I am planning on buying a new repro so this one will go up for sell if anybody is interested. But before I put it over on the sale board I wanted to make sure I was correct and it is indeed original.

It has "Wagner Lockheed Made in the USA" cast into the top and "Wagner Lockheed" cast into the side as well.

Yes... I "polished" the side a little bit. The bolts broke off on both sides of the frame and I had to cut it off.

Soooo... what do you think? Original?

Hi AL
Why are you getting rid of an original master cylinder??? They are the best

Pull this one apart, sand blast it,, Rebuild with a STAINLESS STEEL SLEEVE, and it will last 10 times as long as a repro one, and will still look original.

Go to a truck brake shop , the are the best and will know what a sleeve is!!

Thanks guys for the encouragement. I may try to rebuild it... at least I'm starting to think about it. Does anybody know a good link on here explaining the rebuild process in detail? I've done a search but could not find anything. Thanks for the help.

Welp... forget about it. I should have stuck with my first gut instinct and tried to sell it to someone with more experience than myself. Now it's toast. :(

Don't feel bad. The dirty break area looks like it was fractured there long ago. The remains of the cap could still be removed by heating with oxy and turned with a pipe wrench. Or two holes ould be drilled in the cap and small high tensile bolts inserted, with a bar across them to turn the cap, after heating.

Thanks Bazza... but I wonder if it is really worth the effort. After the top broke loose there was quite alot of rust that piled out from the inside. My guess is that it is rusted pretty badly internally. And I have to keep reminding myself that I am not trying to preserve this jeep as much as I am trying to restore it back to as much a semblance of its former original appearance as I can afford. I want a dependable daily driver that evokes memories and respect for the men and women that have served this country so bravely.

Long story short I am most likely going to be looking for a new master cylinder soon!

Soooo... on the wall it goes!
