supply to oil filter

Postby Baz Ford » Wed May 30, 2012 4:45 pm

Gents,
What's the latest thinking on restricting oil flow to the filter, to improve oil supply to No 1 big end ?
It used to be a hot topic on the site some years ago. If it's a good idea, where does the ball go?

Hi Baz

Dont do it mate ,the design is perfect the way it is..Just about every large truck and tractor in the world today uses a bypass filter,,, CAT,,, DETROIT,,, CUMMINS... it might be old design but it works beautifully as designed. Its much better for your engine just to keep clean oil in it .. at least once a year no matter what the miles.
The truck I am driving has a detroit constellation engine with 1010700 klms on it and the heads never been off. it has 2 bypass filters installed.
Whats your oil pressure @ idle and say 60 klms?

Well, Ray Cowdrey doesn't seem to think it's perfect. He reckoned it did bugger all.

This was a popular topic a few years ago on the 503, just wondering what current opinion is before I think about doing it.
I think you could either put a ball bearing in the line to stop the oil flow, or a stronger spring to increase pressure to the first bearing.
Who has done either one?

I remember when that topic was hot. I also read Rays suggestion that you should bypass the filter which makes no sense to me. My jeep came with a high volume Melling oil pump and the engine has had a complete overhaul so I won't know whats up with the oil pressure until I am ready to run it, sometime in the next few months, but I am confident that I will have good oil pressure since everything is nice and tight. Frequent oil changes really do an engine right. I have a '91 Nissan pickup truck with over 200,000 miles on it and it runs like new. I have kept up with the maintenance and fluid changes. After all of the work that went into the jeep Im going to change the oil every 3,000 miles or every 4 months to keep it from getting acidic.

Blocking off the oil suply to the oil filter is a bad idea.
It will decrease longevity of the engine.
Do not do it.

That's what I needed Jon, thanks.
It was only an enquiry, I just re-read AAW and wondered if it was worth doing.
BTW, what got me going (and worried) on it was a "knock" in the region of No 1 cyl.
I found the tappet set at more than 30 thou! I am hoping when I restart it my "knock" has gone without further work required.
I used Pete Silvens method of tappet adjustment, seemed to go OK.
As I recall from my last run, oil pressure is about 45psi at around 60kmh.
Thanks for the input Gents,

It was debunked by many including Moses Ludel....I will add my name to the NO's.
Let us know how the tappet stuff worked for you doing by Pete's suggestion....did you also do by 180* firing order method?

It will be some time before I run it John, more to do. I did the valves by adjusting 1 inlet - 4 exhaust together, and so on.

baz

45lbs @ 60klm is excellent.
leave well alone.

I recommend to others when rebuilding your engine, the later cj type , gear oil pumps , they hold a steadier, higher pressure than the old disc pumps.

Well, finally started the motor, and the "knock" has disappeared with valves adjusted properly. Also got rid of the tapping valves too. I reckon the guilty tappet was about 32 thou +.
