Or you can install a bottom cover, WO-801328, from the M-38/M-38A1, it has a reinforcing plat attached to the perimeter and is not distortion prone, it always lies flat. Most will not notice any difference to the appearance.

John and Gindi,

Thanks for the excellent advice !!!!!! It sure as heck stopped the leak we had in my daughter's M 38 A1 transfer case using the double seal and the permatex. I owe you both a cold one !!!!!!!

I've suffered from a leaky transfer case for some time and decided that it's about time it was fixed. As far as I can tell, it's the output shaft oil seal.

At the top of this thread John Gibbins highlighted the problem of shorter repro flanges, but with no measurements. As I only have what I have, I cannot be sure whether mine's too short  (if you'll pardon the expression). How long should it be?

John also recommended tightening the castellated nut to 180 ft lb. My 'professional' torque wrench only goes to 150. Why so high? What happens if it's less?

Thanks!
Charlie

Hi Charlie!

I was the one to post the pic of the WOF flange in this (your) thread. I measured lots of stuff in the rebuild but unfortunately I did not measure the length of the flange. And I have no more access as it´s installed again.

Tightening of Castel Nut:
As of Gindi´s advice (as far as I can recall) I tightened by hand as far as possible and tightened with the wrench up to the next hole for the cotter pin. This is good, if the next hole is a bit away, and might be not sufficient, if the hole is very close. Therefore the 180 ft lb is good to know.
I would start with 100, go up to 120 and 150 and check where the hole comes up.

Just my 2 cent :)

Thanks Gustl for the advice.
I should be able to see if my new flange is one of the short repros. As John says, the shorter flange will not tighten on the spline correctly and it should be possible to spot that.
Cheers

It is not that easy to spot as the brake drun goes inside the flange. Compare what came ot with the new one side by side before fitting.
You can use the repro but must also fit a thick shim so that everything will tighten up properly.

John,

What came out (probably French Hotchkiss) and what went in (new part from Tony Sudds) are the same size, so I have no way of knowing.

Here's a pic with dimensions:

How does this compare to your original longer flange?

Thanks

I no longer have, but the newer [bad] one had no collar for the felt seal & you could check by fitting the new part without the brake drum & sealant etc. & when pushed fiully home the shaft spline should end should be about 1/8" inside the flange.
If OK, remove then fit the brake drum sealant etc.

Hello All,

Borrowing this picture, not sure whose it is

These dimensions are correct for an original rear companion flange # GP-4863 as used on MB/GPW standardised jeeps.

And do not hesitate to install a Reddi (Speedy Sleeve) to return the seal surface of your old Companion Flange to original new. It will save you from the shortcomings of the flanges that have dimensional problems.

try and use the minimum thickness cork gasket as you can as one that is too thick will ;wick' and cause the gasket to leak over time. .8 to 1mm is normally thick enough

just my thoughts
