Starter bushing removal
Can the bronze starter bushing be driven out from the starter side of the bellhousing? It needs to be replaced, but I waited to address this until the motor was already installed .

Re: Starter bushing removal
I assume the tub is on? Yes, it can be driven out from the engine side, it will require a longer instrument. It's a longish bushing, but there should be room between the bellhousing and the tub for it to fall out and away. It will have to be replaced from the motor side too.

Re: Starter bushing removal
There is another thread about the plug that goes on the BACK of the bellhousing (trans side) that has pics with it...
The CORRECT bushing can and should be installed from the FRONT (starter side) so it is flush with the bellhousing....
That should leave enough room to install the plug from the rear.....
Which is the problem with trying to do this with everything still installed in the jeep.
You MIGHT be able to extricate the bushing to the FRONT and as long as the new one is the same length you can tap it in from the front without (hopefully) dislodging the plug out the BACK of the bellhousing.

Re: Starter bushing removal
Drive it all the way thru and out the back with a bushing driver (you can improvise one) and reinstall the replacement from the engine side. The plug is replaceable after a few components in the way are removed. We used to substitute a penny when short of 3/4" Expansion Plugs.

Thinking... If you had a large enough diameter screw tip for a slide hammer, you might get it out that way. I think I'd rather suffer through re-installing the plug after driving the bushing out the back as Ben suggests.
Chuck, the plug is of a larger diameter than the bushing, so leaving "room" behind the bushing to allow for installation of the plug is kind of irrelevant.

Changing the bushing is as simple as deciding on how to pull on your trousers.

Re: Starter bushing removal
There is a tutorial about the starter bushing replacement here:
http://www.rensjeep.com/fixstarter/starterrepair.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
I did it exactly this way. But I also had to ream the new bushing as the inner diameter got smaller by mounting it.

The original 639734 Bushing and its' equivalent aftermarket replacement need no reaming after installation.

Re: Starter bushing removal
I did know that. I thought, I had an equivalent aftermarket replacement from a good source. Nevertheless I had to ream after installing. Otherwise mounting the starter would have been an act of violence. But this is just European experience with bushings from two different (I thought honorable) suppliers.Ben Dover wrote:The original 639734 Bushing and its' equivalent aftermarket replacement need no reaming after installation.

Re: Starter bushing removal
I am out of OEM Bushings, but my starter shop has replacements that are proper ID/OD but may be slightly shorter which is no big deal.

Re: Starter bushing removal
A 9/16" or 14mm tap, a section of 3/4" (19mm) water pipe and a long bolt or length of all thread of the same size as the tap will pull the bushing out from the front without removing the plug. Remove the starter, stuff rags in the opening to catch any chips. Tap the old bushing to size as deep as you can, thread in the long bolt and a 2" section of pipe with washers under the head of the bolt or nut on the stud. Use the bolt or nut on the stud to pull the old bushing out of the bellhousing. Install the new bushing using a long 1/3" bolt with a washer and nut as seen in the link above to install the new bushing.
My local hardware store has the sintered bronse bushings in stock for under $3. Size is 5/8" OD, 1/2" id, 1-1/8" length. ( 7/8" long from the factory). The longer bushing will fit, but you can cut it to length with a hacksaw, if needed. A 1/2" drill bit will ream it to size, if it compressed while fitting it. A little dab of grease helps when installing the starter, too.

Re: Starter bushing removal
Great, I just installed a still-in-cosmoline-NOS bushing in the bellhousing - needs to be reamed too! About 8 thous smaller than the starter shaft...

it should be soaked 24 hours in motor oil prior to installation.

Re: Starter bushing removal
What is LO? I thought the bushings were oil impregnated bronze. That is what we use here at Delco Remy.
