Help with noise please.

Post by Armyspecial » Sun Jul 03, 2011 10:34 am

Hi Guys,

My Jeep developed a worrying noise today which i'm hoping you may be able to help me locate?

The background..... Engine just completed 200+ miles following rebuild, Handbrake (Late internal type) recently dismantled and rebuilt with new Oil seal on transfer case.

The sound is like a combination of a rattle and 2 pieces of metal rubbing together at speed?, but heres the strange thing, does not do it during acceleration or decelleration, but does do it when you keep to a constant speed??

When i hang out of the Jeep the noise does seem to be coming from the centre (handbrake) area.

The sound did not get any worse during todays trip, approx 100 miles.

Any ideas what to look for please guys??

Thanks

Richard

Could be worn splines or slip yoke on rear propeller shaft or loose transfer case mounts. Check the mounting bolts on the transmission crossmember.

My Dad couldn't help me with my hotrods but when I was stumped with a problem his standard response was:
"What were you messing with right before the problem started to occur? Start with that and see if you can find the problem there."

So before you start tearing stuff apart that worked previously....get out the manual and go over the reassembly of the components you were just "messing with" and leave the wild-goose chases until you eliminate the items you were just working on.

Chuck is right it is "something you have done to cause the problem" so what did you do last?
You have the handbrake adjusted to tightly....adjust each shoe till locked up then loosen each off between 5 & 10 adjuster notches or until the noise is gone....then you can sleep on both ears?
a rattle and 2 pieces of metal rubbing together at speed?
usually louder rattle as you pull up @ a stop sign or slow right down though but give it a go.

The point im making guys is what would only make a noise when at idle speed?

Something you did when you replaced things or something replaced that is different from what you took off would be the simple answer. No one really knows what you did or how you did it.
Aren't we a patient, helpful lot?
What happened to that metal shroud of the yoke? What is it touching?
Jack one back wheel off the ground & have someone turn that wheel while you are under the vehicle & it is out of gear, might be a good starting point.
Did you ensure there was @ least 1/8" space between the end of the shaft spline & the yoke spline so that when you tightened the retaining nut the washer did not bottom on the shaft spine before the yoke was pulled up tight?

Gindi offered: It would help if that helpfull lot had a clue how to diagnose Richard's issue.
http://www.g503.com/forums/viewtopic.ph ... 2#p1084602" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
If you had been following Richard's thread above plus the "help with noise one today" you would know how & where to pinpoint the problem. A problem that started after Richard pulled parts off & re-assembled.
Chuck was spot on with where to look but a couple of others who can't diagnose want to go off on a wild goose chase.
Maybe we can get to 6 or 7 pages again?

As suggested, looking at the handbrake repair recently done would be the first place Mr. Spock would check out, but then again Mr. Spock used LOGIC in his thinking process....so as artificer just posted.....rattling noises that come and go depending on speed are due to the vibrations at RPM or the torque or lack of torque when accelerating, decelerating or at speed.....go over the last repair on the handbrake/ebrake system and review the job with your manual to be sure you have it all together correctly.

By the way....what was wrong with the handbrake? What did you do and did the repair job now give you a perfectly working ebrake?

If not...then that is another indicator of where the problem might be.

The Companion Flange of the transfer has a defined bolt pattern ensuring the positive allignment and installation of the companion flange, brake drum, and front propeller shaft flange.
To answer Richards' question of what would make a noise at "idle speed"?
The following can cause a rattling noise at idle with the clutch disengaged. The Throw Out Bearing and loose Clutch Disk Dampening Springs, Loose Clutch Pilot Bearing, and Worn Splines in the Hub of Clutch Disk.

Other causes of a noise at idle speed.
Timing Chain noise, Frayed Fan Belt, Manifold Heat Valve flutter, Broken Fuel Pump Rocker Arm Spring. Hood Rattle, Maligned Exhaust System Parts, Broken Oil Filter Bracket, etc.

Perhaps the proper question is "not what did you do last", but "what didn't you do"?

For 200+ miles after the rebuild there was no problem....then a repair on the handbrake setup resulted in an intermittant noise. Hmm....

Before the Wild Goose Chase gets any worse.....the last repair done where the noise began is the FIRST place to check....after that, the Chase can begin if it is not solved.....until then, let's wait to see what he finds out before posting 27 maybes.....

Why would a brake make noise at idle, assuming the vehicle is not in motion?
If at Idle speed assuming the vehicle is in gear and in motion, the clutch noise symptoms can be ignored.

If the ebrake assembly is not correctly installed, springs and thing will rattle when the vibration from the motor is at the right pitch. When this is sorted out, if it is not the problem....THAT is the time for a list of other possibilities.

Why not tell Richard to readjust the Parking brake? He could remove all of the parts on the backing plate in order to eliminate that the noise is indeed the parking brake.

Guys, thanks all for your input.

What Joel just said has got me thinking. When I installed the handbrake I did not adjust it. Reason was it worked ok on full adjustment so I left as is! Could it possibly be something as simple as the springs vibrating due to lack of tension??

I wonder?

Hopefully, Richard it is assembled with all of it's parts in the correct place, some of the pieces are becoming scarce. Did you have a manual to refer to. Yes, the parking brake can make noises as you describe, especially if the shoes are dragging or loose internals are contacting the drum. I gotta hand it to you tho Richard, you have had some brain teasers that make experts scratch their heads on just about everything that makes a Jeep go. If you have the manual for the internal expanding parking brake, the instructions are straight forward.
