Re: Ford GPW frame riveting instructions
Thankyou for your reply Hinrick. I am now also convinced that I have the top of the tool too thick and too tall. I will address this situation and get the tool welded up over the next few weeks.
I have the cylinder, and have made the sleeve to go around it, along with the nut that screws to the top of the cylinder with the 21/4 unf thread. Now I need to start work on the actual forming dollies themselves.
I guess I can come to you for the BOM rivets?
Regards
Nige

Nige,
Sounds like you are getting close to the actual riveting job! You might want to do the hot rivets first, then
do the BOM´s all in one day. Takes short time to do the BOM rivets. Best place for you, since you live in the
UK is to rent a Huck BOM puller unit from: www.permalokfastening.co.uk
They are great to deal with and will sell you BOM rivets in low quantity. Some sellers will only sell you a patch
of 100 each size, making it costly to buy. I think they charge 100 GBP per day on the puller rental, so best to
get that all done in one day to save on the cost.

Re: Ford GPW frame riveting instructions
Can someone tell me if the rivets on the front number gussets are 5/16" or 3/8"? Also where is a good place to get steel rivets from?

Re: Ford GPW frame riveting instructions
Chris,
I am not sure what you mean by "front number gussets" But the standard front bumper gussets use 3/8 steel rivets. Best place to buy those rivets is:
http://rjleahy.com/Store/rivets/trvr.htm
If you only need to do the front gussets and not rest of frame, then you might want to use the imitation rivets offered by Mullins jeep parts TX. But
the lower gussets rivet through the spring hangers. I personally did not want to use these there. But my jeep will not go offroading any time soon.

[quote="Viking27"]We found that you need 4 changable end pieces to gain access everywhere in the frame. Here are their details and sizes:
Hi Hinrik,
Did you made 4 changable head pieces per rivet diameter?

Re: Ford GPW frame riveting instructions
Dani,
There are not that many 5/16 rivets in the frame. Mainly they secure the front U crossmember to frame
rails and the rear one. I don't think we needed 4 sets for that. I will look at our tool rig tonight and
reply later.

Thank you Hinrik for the reply. I'm trying to build one myself.
I will take pictures and send them to you.

BelgiumT,
Nice looking clamp there! I like the double action jack. Yes, please post photos when completed.
Did you make a clearance test on the end of your clamp? Seams our clamp has a bit more pointy
end. I just riveted together a Hudson 1930 antique car with our rig last tuesday. The 5th frame
repaired with it

Re: Ford GPW frame riveting instructions
Hi Hinrik,
first of all many thanks for searing your knowledge on this topic.
And Christophe for the drawings!
Indeed , I still need to chamfer the nose of the tool on my milling machine.
A client of mine had some 3/8 rivets in his shop, so I hope to test it this weekend.
I will post a review asap.
Why do you keep buying all those bad frames?

I did the test with the hydraulic unit of my press and it worked pretty well.

Re: Ford GPW frame riveting instructions
Tim,
Looking good there. But I would put some more welds on the tube / clamp portion. Iceland is wet and snowy in fall, winter and spring, and the roads
are salted in winter, so cars rusty very easy here. Not all 5 car frames are mine. This last was just a paid job. Guy owning a antique car hired me to
come in and do the riveting
How will you use the double action jack? Add a hydraulic control module?

Re: Ford GPW frame riveting instructions
Hinrik,
actualy the hydrolic control is the most tricky part, you probably used the jack because its cheap and you have the contol and the cilinder.
, I was thinking of using this cilinder on the picture and a hydrolic power unit (220bar) with a 3way valve. in /out/ and neutal.
One problem, to generate the same force as the 10T jack you need a lot of pressure. For example diameter of a 10T jack is 50mm (same as my double action)
so 10 000kg/ 19.6cm²= 510 bar. So I found a HP foot pedal pump that generates 700bar if you power it with 8bar air. I will test it with 350bar later this week.
The seals of a normal piston can only have 250bar so I hope the thing stays in one piece

Re: Ford GPW frame riveting instructions
Hi guys!
I can see that some of you have taken the opportunity to build riveting machine using my drawings. The last one seems good and I'm sure you will done good job with it. Thank you for pictures and also for all your feedbacks on that tool.
I will really appreciate if you could give us more information on hydraulic part with references and suppliers.
Regards,
Christophe.

Re: Ford GPW frame riveting instructions
This is all very positive. I am seeing more and more homemade tools being made, more youtube videos, so looks like this thread has helped
some people which was the original goal of it.
Tim, please post photos later of the finished tool and a youtube video of it working would be great, if not too much trouble,
Regards
Hinrik
