Re: brake drum gets hot brake drags
Dragging brakes is one good indication of sticking Master Cylinder or Wheel Cylinders, especially when the vehicle has had no brake issues for a long period of time. The brake shoe and master cylinder rod adjustments do not go out of adjustment by themselves. Best to check the master cylinder to see if the piston is returning. This can be done by peeling back the boot and working the pedal, if there is rust and corrosion or the piston does contact the "piston stop plate" at the rear, the master cylinder needs attention. If it is just the one wheel, it is best to pull that wheel and inspect the wheel cylinder.

Definitely not over my head "master" The piston should come back to the stop plate [washer] & if it does the master cylinder most likely doesn't need attention. Sounds, to me anyway, like the opppossite to what you said?Joel wrote: or the piston does contact the "piston stop plate" at the rear, the master cylinder needs attention.

Re: brake drum gets hot brake drags
Sorry that this is over your head, John, the "Master Cylinder Stop Plate" is WO 637597, you can find it in your TM's, in the SNL, and in the Jeep Dealer Parts Manuals. I have been using accurate Jeep parts nomenclature for over half a century, it is habit forming and accurate.
The "stop plate" is that "washer" that is held in place by the Piston Stop Lock Wire.

Re: brake drum gets hot brake drags
Thanks for that advice guys. It turned out to be a case of Crimp One Off brake fluid from the auto store having attracted moisture, resulting in my lovely brand new front right wheel cylinder rusting within a few months of two new front ones being fitted. With them being brand new i didnt expect that they would have issues. Didnt count on stores selling me sub par brakefluid. All is cleaned out and bled with new (Hopefully for real this time) brake fluid.
Id rather walk than not drive a Jeep

Colin raises a very good point to follow up on.
Brake fluid quality deteriorates once opened so do not buy in bulk, but always in small containers & do not store partially empty containers.

Re: brake drum gets hot brake drags
something to consider is that not all brake fluids in different parts of the world are made to the same standard, the quality can differ.

Where do you get this stuff from, WW2 magazines or did they teach it @ Jeep school 50 years ago?Ben Dover wrote:something to consider is that not all brake fluids in different parts of the world are made to the same standard, the quality can differ.
Colin [NZ] is in the civilized world & brake fluids are always certified e.g. exceeds FMVSS116, DOT 3 or the stricter Australasian [means Australian & New Zealand] standard AS/NZS Grade 1 requirements plus the container will be marked "DO NOT MIX BRAKE FLUIDS".
Rather than raising non issue rubbish consider Colin's statement that his "brake fluid attracted water" so it would be correct to assume that when he bought the fluid, it did not contain water, until after he opened the container or the container had been opened before he bought it.
Non DOT 5 [& this is not a thread about different types of brake fluid, so leave it alone], poly glycol brake fluid is hygroscopic [when exposed to air, it naturally absorbs moisture from that air]. That is why Jeep brake systems [plus most other vehicles] have the recommendation of being flushed every couple of years, otherwise what happened to Colin could happen to you.
This is the case whether you drive your vehicle or have it sitting on stands in a snowed in shed. Atmospheric air pressure is always applied to the brake fluid in the master cylinder reservoir & that fluid [if it is poly glycol] is continually sucking in moisture.

Colin was the one who brought up "sub par brake fluid".
